Explorer opens at startup?

hi y'all

can anyone help me with figuring out how to STOP Explorer from defaulting to start when I log on to the internet?

I use a different browser which i THOUGHT i had designated as my default.... but all of a sudden the past week or so i get an Explorer window popping up as soon as I log in - somehow the properties have changed wihtout my doing it. ARGH

now I can't seem to find the right place to adjust my default browser - (brain skip!!!!) - can anyone point me in the right direction?

Tools > Internet Options > Programs tab,
Click on the "Reset Web Settings button", at bottom of page. Also remove the check mark that appeard in the box bellow the "Reset Web Settings button" button.

thanks J-Kid but it nah work.......

i did reset web settings; checkbox was not populated so didn't have to 'un-check' it.

THen got a dialogue box asking did I want to make Avant my default browser; said YES.

--- but still get Explorer at log-in

You should have mentioned earlier that the alternaet browser you wanted to make default was Avant. Avant is just a shell over Internet Explorer. It uses all the same resources as IE. From your operating system point-of-view it sees no difference between the two. As far as it is concernet it is still dealing with IE even though you are using the Avant shell.

That maybe controlled in your dial up program. See if it has a setting to launch a specific browser. Some ISP dialers use the default browser and some select a specific browser. Just a hunch.

Also do not reset web settings in the tools /options/programs section as this resets IE as the default browser which you dont want. And then uncheck the box below reset web settings.

but anyway, yes mi know Avant is an Explorer shell, but been running it for 2 month and it never did this before

and no, is not de dialup app. i actually thought of that and looked - but anyway it has been same one for a year, and even when I used to use Explorer, it did not startup til I told it to.
It neva just automatically popup de minute the connection live......

But now it pops up before I start Avant at all, right after my dialup connects, all by itself in its own window So i guess that means it HAS to be sumthin with the dialup, right? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

'web settings' prompted me to make Avant my default browswer, and my Avant prefs set that way as well, so Exp. not the default. box wasn't checked, and i left it so.

Open your registry and check the following and let me know what is says in the right pane..

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOThttpshellopencommand]

Also go to tools/avant browser options/files and protocols and check all the buttons and then click on make avant default browser..and see if this helps. Reboot just to make sure the changes take

already did the F & P, Avant is default....

start/run/in the open box type regedit/ OK ..

Just look for the line and make no changes. bad things can happen if you are not familiar with the registry.

anyway when i highlite "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" in the left pane, the right pane populates with:
(Default) (value not set)

did you follow it all the way down to "httpshellopencommand"?

It should have a line like ""C:Program FilesInternet Exploreriexplore.exe" %1" in the right pane

If you did and its blank you could add a new string value like "C:Program FilesAvant Browseriexplore.exe" Notice AVANT Browser in the path.

Write all this down in case you have to find it and delete it. And of course do so at your own risk...I hate to suggest anyone mess with their registry.. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]ray:

well, not sure what you mean by follow it all the way down - in the HKEY CLASSES ROOT folder, there are a million things, none like the line you mention though.

there are 5 other HKEY folders - is that iexpolore.exe command line suposed to be in the CLASSES-ROOT folder or one of the others?

Yeh when you see the hot classes root folder, click the + signs all the way until you find the line I refer to. The + signs open different folders so you have to scroll down each time you click one. Hope you understand


By the way you are using XP?
