Transferring old music file

J-Kid, this has been on my plate for sometime, so I guess I may as well try and get some help if I can. On my old Windows 95 puter, I have a modest amount of Napster music downloads stored from the days before the legality became the issue it is today, I would like to transfer them before I get rid of the old computer. Does it make any sense to transfer those files to my XP 'puter and if so, would copying them on CD-RW disc for transfer be the way to go rather than using CD-R discs.?

Just burn them to CD-R's and transfer them, this way you would also have a back-up. To use CD-RW re-writing function you need to install packet software, if you dont have it installed already with your burning software. Not to mention CD-r is cheaper than CD-rw. You could also slip out the drive from the old computer and temp slip it into the new PC and just drag and drop the files from one HD to the next.

Thanks J-kid. Burning I could do, but you intrigue me with the idea of temporarily slipping out the old drive and temporarily slipping it into the new PC. Turn off the computer, pull the power cord and remove the PC case cover.

Look on the back of the second Hard Drive for a tiny black or white two pin connector. It will be bridging two of the pins in a 3-set row of 2-pin jumpers. Locate the "SLAVE" set, usually the middle pair of pins. Pull off the tiny plastic jumper from the "MASTER" jumper and and push it onto the 2 slave jumper pins. Remember where you got it from.

Slide di secohd HD into a vacant bay in di new computer or prop it up high enoufh in a cardboard box. Look for a flat ribbon cable with two 80-pin connectors on it. The One at the end will be plugged into the existing HD already. Plug the secons one into the back of the second HD, make sure you observe the keying on the connector. Look for and get one of the spare four wire (black, yellow, red, green it think) power connectors and plug it into the back of the hard drive.

Plug back in the power cord and power up the computer. Start up yor file manager and locate the files you want on the "D" drive, then select them and drag-and-drop them in a new folder on the "C" drive.

Replace everything back the way you found it by reversing the above steps.

You could also, if both computers have a network card, get a cross-linked network cable, and hook the one up to the other, you can than reach the comp through your network neigbourhood, and enjoy the speed of network connections to transfer your files ...

Be sure it's a CROSS-LINKED cable (means the out of one pc is connected to the in of the oter pc)

J-kid, Today I just decided to take out the Hard Drive from the old '95. `There is only oneI plastic connector with 2 red, 2 yellow and 4 black coded wires on(4 PINS), and there is nothing showing a "slave set". I also unplugged the ribbon connection which is a 40 pin type. There is one other connection slot beside the 4 pin one, shows 4 small pins similar to the 40 pin type with a couple bracket looking bits with it. That's all.

The label tells me it's a MAXTOR product which replaced the original, when I upgraded for more disc space and more RAM way back when. Under Master/Single, it says "ON", ...Under SLAVE, it says "OFF". ...Is it possible to proceed with this J-kid ?

You need to first pull the jumper from where it says Master/Single "ON", and put it where it says SLAVE, "OFF". Then plug in the second connector on the ribbon cable to the 40-pin socket on the old Win-95 hard drive. Dont worry anout the connector with the 4 tiny pins, that is for audio output. Plug the red-yellow-black connector with the large pins, into the keyed 4-way power socket on the 95 hard drive. Power up and your set to go.

OK J, I now realized that when you say look on on the back for the jumpers you described, this is where they are and your directive needs be followed. I am more aware of what is involved in removing the '95 HD and putting it beside the one in(the XP). Never went into my computer before!! ...Untill I take the time to locate the jumpers and follow your directions, I'll put a hold on this for a while. ...I'll copy and keep your instructions untill then.
