Do antivirus programs work?

My computer has all kinds of crap running around in it, annoying popups that never seem to want to go away, always want to be loaded first on your computer, slowing everything right down...

I want to buy a game online, but am scared that all these things that find their way onto my computer will end up crashing it and then I lose my money because I got the game online and don't have a hard copy backup.

Is an antivirus program the answer? I used to have McAfee years ago, but let it lapse.

Or maybe I shouldn't buy any games online? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

With the way the internet is today, it is foolhardy to operate without having adequate protection. However I think your problem is is due to adware. Download Adaware from download.com. From the sound of things this should solve your problem.

MG, yuh serious yuh noh hav noh anti-virus software!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look yah daughta, goh download free AVG anti virus software. Dat ah whe many people use on here.

Also get yuself ah firewall ah good router (plugged into your present modem) will do the trick.

As fi di game download thing. Unless you get the full program via a compressed, uncompressed, or self-extracting EXE file (that you can then burn to a CD), don't buy it online, get the CD through the method of shipping it to your house.

J-Kid have right..I had manny problems with my computer till I started check my system by spybot, ad-adware and no adware..that programs remove all unwanted spy files. I use now avast! antivirus and Kerio Personal Firewall. Avast! is great antivir tool, I cuold say better than AVG but choice is yours. Kerio will protect you from attacks from network. All that programs are free..
if you not find them you can ask me I'll give you a links to web sides, but I hope that you'll find them without my help...

thanks, Owca_bwooy. i downloaded avast last night. i fell asleep while it was going through my system, but before that i could see that TONS of my files were infected by different viruses.

Thing is, I've had avast move the infected files to a folder, because I wasn't sure if my system could survive those files being deleted. So now i have a toxic dump on my system. What do I do with it? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

when I get home from work today I will try the spybot and adware software.

spybot i've got. i can barely run it cause all the infected files from that avast folder keep popping back up. there's over 400 of them, and so my computer is one long set of "warniing, there's a virus on this computer!" as it goes acknowledges each of those infected files.

Should I delete those files? they are mostly Win32 viruses. How can I clean up the computer? It won't allow me to repair the files...

yuh too bad, J-kid. lissen, what does AVG do? does it have a good record of repairing infected files? because I'm at the point now where I am willing to uninstall avast in favour of an antivirus that can actualy fix my files.

if i hear from you that AVG is not so good at repairing files either, then I'll just kill all those infected files that avast identified and deal with the consequences.

I use AVG myself. I am very satisfied wid it. I prefer it over McAfee AV and it is free an updates itself. You can set it to run while you sleep.

Just buying anti virous software not just going to solve the problem. There is a worm virous norton and other anti virous software can't stop.

Thats why they told people to get the service pack2 cause it as some thing that block the worm from interfare with your programs.

My computer was doing all those crazy stuff. Ofter down loading service pack2 Pop ups gone.

All the confusion is gone, my computer is working fine now.

My no number one problem now is email spam that can never be stop. Spamer find ways around my filters now its useless.

Yes MG, (it is called healing) but not all files, can always be 100% repaired by any AV software. Sometimes the nature of the virus will corrupt a file if you try to repair it. The only remedy in that case is to re-install the file(s).
