Well, in basic terms it replaces the floppy disk for transporting (and modifying) data in a convenient manner. It is a lot more flexible and stores a lot more information and/or files than a floppy, or zip disk.
Basically it is like a tiny hard drive (flash drive) that you can plug and unplug (in your USB port) an cary around in your pocket. You can get them in sizes such as, 64M(cheap), 128M, 256M, 1Geg(very expensive).
