MicroSoft- XP? ....

I have ME, right now, but am thinking of upgrading.
Is Microsoft coming out with a new one soon???
If I buy XP, should I buy it from a puter store, Cosco, or online? Or does it even matter?

How fast is your commputer...??Don't commit same mistake like me..I instaled XP on my commputer and then come in that my comp can't lift that system cause he is too powerless...everything work slow I have P 400 with 256 MB SDRAM..before that I had ME too..

I agree with Owca_bwooy, check your system spec's before you buy XP since it needs a newer system to run well on. Windows ME was one of MicroSoft's worst OS ever released, if you cant upgrade to XP I'd suggest installing Windows 98 SE, or Windows 2k. Windows ME is an extremely unstable OS.

My favorite OS is probably win 2k AS, but I do keep an XP Pro box at home to debug on. The minimum system requirements fo XP Home are:

-PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

-128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

-1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*

-Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor

-CD-ROM or DVD drive

-Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

Owca_bwooy, you can upgrade your memory to 512MB and switch to a faster hard drive to improve the speed. I have XP installed on 450Mz PC and have achieved good performance with only those changes. If you are adventerous you can even overclock the motherboard to get even more speed.

It does not matter where you buy XP, what matters if you want Win_XP "HOME" or "PRO"? Go for the best price. Yes, M_soft is coming out with a 64 bit version, but I would not wait for it. It will be a while until the volume of software and hardware catch-up to the same level that now supports Win_XP or Win_98.

Ya if you only have 64m ram its probably the old pc 100 or 133 ram. A 256mb stick should be pretty cheap and your motherboard should be able to take it. Before you buy be sure to check what type of ram you can use by checking the spec's on your motherboard.

I suspect that you may have 133Mz buss speed and can still find that at your local Best Buy or Circuit City type stores?

However, the big question is (if you have 100Mz RAM), do you have "double" or "single-sided" RAM sticks?

What year you bought your PC? May need to buy a new motherboard before thinking of upgrading to DDR-RAM and as a result upgrade to XP

The new xp cd ram came with new feature, such as service pack2 etc.

If your computer run window me there is chance it might run window xp if the mother board have
DDR capability.


I think xp is getting better. I like window me also cause it organize things and put them in order just as xp.

Tp get the configuration of your computer go to www.Belarc.com and click on free download to down load their system analyser (calllled belarc adviser). It will tell you all the innarfd and sortware loaded on it.
You can also check your mother board model and it will say what it can take to upgrade,and it's limits.

Not talking about DDR. The older 100M Hz SDRAM memory had the ram chips on both sides of the printed circuit board/stick. It is critical to get the right match because, even though it may say PC-100 memory, if it is single sided, it won't work properly in an older machine NOT specifically designed for those single sided memory.

Check micro wharehouse for oldr Ram, 100 mhz only comes in single.
Double (DDR) comes with the minimum 266mhz.
