I recently wrote to gateway and told them my problem. They sold me 250mb ram of memory and Window xp claiming that the computer was fine.

Now I am experiencing the same or worse problems again.

a)Keyboard not responding sometimes have to reboot(new problem)

b)Failure to initialize (new)

c)Crashes when at certain sites (new)

d) Internet explorer doesn't alway work.


Can't download anything or it runs like molasses even with Road Runner.

What should I do it is 5 years old.

Do you have win xp installed?
What are the specs of your puter ...
CPU, memory, disk, ...

Sounds a lot like win95/98 problems ...

When last yuh re-install the operating system? Sound like yuh may bi ah candidate fi jus format di hard drive an start from scratch wid ah new install.

Before yuh duh dat however, gi wi some more details as tuh whe all ah dis start tuh happen?

From what I gather above, the problem was occuring before you installed the new memory and new operaring system?

If not What events preceeded the problem when it started happening?

Did you install any new software, hardware?

Is your computer mad, because yuh cuss it out one day before having your morning coffee? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Have you checked that the cables are properly plugged in the back of your PC.

What Operating System did you have on the PC before, and did you install XP right over the old OS?

Jedi: so how do I do that? I had one of my kid's college buddies install the xp version, but it looks like he left in the ME stuff cos every minute it ask mi if I want to delete the old stuff.

Just recently bout last week, then I uninstalled AOL instant messenger and Lime Wire and it stopped. Then the keyboard started actin up this week

Jedi: No before that it was so slow and crashing every minute.

Jedi: Well dockta just before dat it start seh, initialization failure, but mi ignore it cus mi did tink seh is a pop-up

No di cussing started after, but there are other's using the computer and I also understand that it could be something stored in favorites.

Have you checked that the cables are properly plugged in the back of your PC.

Jedi: I did that a couple of times with the keyboard but I find that restarting it usually works. Thing is I find that I have to restart two to three times to get it to restart properly.

Remember I said that gateway sold it to me. Now I tried your link but I am kinda confused as to what exactly to do. Which of the directions should I follow. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

Follow the last instructions that "I" gave. If Gateway provided a boot floppy, use theirs, if not, use your own.

What did you do? I am so mad right now I am on the verge of flinging it through the window but since I have faith in my PC and I believe it is a problem that may be fixed I am going to try one last time [img]/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]ray:

(((J-Kid))) I re-installed windows xp and the keyboard doesn't work at all even after plugging it out, and replugging and restarting the computer several times, I noticed that the keyboard is doing this:

a)(start up pc) keyboard not lighting up.
b)(reboot) only on num. lock
c) (unplug, replug, reboot) only on caps lock, but won't switch back to num. lock. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]


Works at start up like when it says to see systems setting press F1 key, that works. But then when windows begins that is it. The keyboard is not even a year old.

Remember I said that it had a problem of "failure to initialize" now it won't shut down on command I have to manually shut it down.

I haven't gotten on the net to see what else could be wrong because the keyboard doesn't work.

Final call before I call gateway and make a decision. Thanks for your help



First it used to say failure to initialize, now it starts fine but won't shutdown without shutting off, but this is only some of the timeso/.

Have you tried plugging in another key board?

Does the mouse work OK?

Okay J-Kid first of all let me thank you for your patience [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

So I went out this morning and purchased a new keyboard. So I removed the tower to unplug the keyboard when I noticed that the mouse was unplugged [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] Then I also noticed that the cord for the mouse which is white was black behind the tower [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] So then I plugged it back in and now the keyboard works just fine... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

So anywayz this morning when I came home I turned on the computer and it came on all right and before I went out to purchase the keyboard I shut it down and it shut down okay....ahritey then...I will keep you posted as I go along if anything else goes wrong. Meanwhile I am going back to Office Max now [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]
