Sorry for the late reply, but doesn't the computer boot from the XP CDrom?
That way you just put in the CD, start the pc, and follow on-screen instructions

Yes, but the problem is, if you have a corrupted system, virus or trojans imbeded in the old system Windows XP, won't remove it. What it does is recognize that there is an old OS already there, then gives you the option to either install along side of the old one, or on top of it. In either case, this still leaves you with a corrupted hard drive, even though for all appearance you are now up and running. You may have a keylogger, trojan, virus, malicious java script or corrupted files still residing on the system drive. Formatting the hard drive, rids you of that potential problem.

I agree, when you reinstall without formatting your drives, a lot gets left behind.

That's why, when I reinstall windoze, I always throw away my partitions, and reformat all my drives ...

This can be done in windows setup ...
