So I got this trouble ticket in which the user described the classic symptom of a machine that had been disconnected from the network. The ticket stated that the help desk analyst had received verification from the user that the patch cable was plugged in.
So I go deskside, and the patch cable was obviously not plugged into the back of the computer. I plug it in, and the machine fires up and logs in just fine.
Some time later, the user drops by her cube. I tell her what had happened, and she tells me "the Help Desk guy asked me to check whether the patch cable was plugged into the wall; he didn't ask whether it was plugged into the computer!"
In the words of Dave Barry: I am not making this up.
