IE browser extremely slow

This is driving me crazy. IE takes donkey years to load a web page. I could fly to Jamaica and come back and the Jamaicans.com web site is still loading in the browser.

I did a diagnostic test on the DSL and it is running at optimum speed. So I've ruled it out.

Apart from the slow load time, on this site, I cannot see any images. Where the image should be, it is just a blank, e.g., the little gif below your username.

'Bout two months ago I did a Windows update, and it forced installed SP2 on the PC. I've turned off Windows XP firewall, so I have my Zonealarm running.

I don't know... just know that the slow load time mek mi feel like fi fling di rockstone through the computer. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] frustrating the hell out of me... as you can see [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

have u tried to stop & refresh the browser. I have found there are some ads on the j'com screen that cause the browser to hang.. The problem resolves itself with a stop & reload.

If u are posting or replying to a topic though when this happens, it may result in multiple posts.

It's not just happening on this site, but every web site I go to. Next to Jamaicans.com, I use google.com very often, and it too takes forever to load.

I did a search and patiently waited and read about said topic. The common recommendation is to get an anti-spyware to see what adware or other junk may be on the system... that I'm unaware of.

I got a spybot thingy and it found some junk. (I thought my firewall was keeping all the adware junks out but I guess not.) Did a clean up, then I did a virus scan using my Pandasoftware (much better than Norton), and things are running much better.

I'm keeping an eye on it though... hate when my browser is getting bugged down. Btw, I can see your smiling face. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Go under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Multimedia. Make sure, "Show Image Download Placeholders" box is NOT checked. But, also make sure "Show Pictures" box is checked.

What version number of Zone Alarm do you have? Is it 4.5.538.000?

J-k... it's version 4.5.594.000

Just did your instructions. Since I closed IE, and came back to the board, I couldn't view any images again, so I hope this one is the fix.

I'm still having the problem with slow IE loading web pages. I also notice this 'Smiley Central' things in the browser toolbar. I'm searching for its uninstall but can't it.

Try flushing your cache:

Tools > Internet Options > Delete files & offline content > OK


Do you have a router also, or just a modem?

Mi mean that mi nuh have no router connected. That I disconnected months ago because I too often had to disconnect/reconnect to have it working. I'm only on the DSL modem.

OK, Try dis. Power down your computer. Disconnect the power cord from the modem (either at the modem or the wall is ok) for about 10 minutes. This will flush the modem buffer and should help, if not fix the problem.

By the way, why don't you switch to Mozilla or Firefox which are better browsers?

I'll chime in here too. IE is really kinda dangerous to use to surf the net so I have switched all my users over to Mozilla or FireFox. If you must use IE I suggest frequent updates via Microsoft Update service and get a virus scanner (I suggest AVG http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php since its free for home users or try McAffe, beware of Norton as its very agressive). Its good that you installed ZoneAlarm but I also suggest you get 2 programs to scan your PC for Adware/Spyware. IE tends to get choked up with ads and scripts so I often run Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/ and AdWare http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ (both are free on the net)

Again keep the Spybot and Adware programs updated with the latest versions (much like anti-virus software) before you run a scan.

If possible upgrade to a new browser and get off IE. The problem with IE is its so integerated with the OS that its very easy to get infected with a modern virus or worm.

J-kid, I did as you instructed and got some improvement in the browser's load time on web pages. Much better.

Earlier I installed Firefox and guess what... Jamaicans.com and google.com load in not even a second. Could it be that IE is choked up with ads and scripts as Reby said?

With much sound advice, you've helped me tremendously with this issue. Saturday mi up 'til 3AM battling the slow load time, cleaning cache, turning on/off...

I think the headache is now over. So far, I like Firefox. Main concern was importing the Favorites but it took care of that during setup. Removed all icons to IE off the desktop and out of quick launch... Firefox set as my default browser.
