It's on my pc and I can't seem to get rid of it. I've downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy from Microsoft but to no avail. My anti-virus, Symantec, can't get rid of it either.
Symantec is a good AV but its always good to have a backup AV scanner. There is a good free one called AVG that you can download off http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

My chouce is Zonealarm. They also have a free version.

How do I check to see if it's on?
A firewall on dial-up isn't a madatory thing. It is more for controlling access to and from your PC, but it doesn't stop viruses or spyware.
