HELP PLEASE! ( What do you want windows to do?)

I went to unload my digital camera's photos. When the box came up with the choices of programs to use, it was blank! I've never seen it blank before, it's supposed to have a menu of choices. OK, so I went and found my Nikon program and opened it up, and it tells me the camera is not connected to the computer, which it was, that's when my menu options box came open only blank inside.

I hope I was able to explain that so it can be understood! Thanks for any options anyone can come up with!!

IM, reboot and start over. Sometimes a reboot will help just about anything.

I've rebooted, I've shut down. I've also did a disk restore. Hmmm...thanks anyway Q.K. This is making me nuts! :verymad:

Did you turn the power button on the camera to the "ON" position?

Hi J-Kid! Yes I had the camera ON, I also just tried a different port. The computer is recognizing that the camera is there, but the box that had the programs to choose from, is now blank!

OK, here is the empty box. It shoud have a list of about 6 programs in it to choose from to unload my camera, but all of a sudden the list went missing!

Edited to add: the E4500 is the model camera, so the computer does know it's there but where did my programs go?

PS...This program came loaded in my computer when I bought it.

The first time you connect your digital camera to your PC, you can select an action and check "Always use this program for this action or Always do the selected action" to keep from seeing a (pop-up box) prompt every time you plug in the camera. Did you do this by accident the last time you use the camera?


If you did that and want to use the previous program or a different program to handle your digital photos? Connect the camera again, right-click its icon in file "Explorer", and choose Properties. Use the settings on the Events tab to select what happens the next time you link the cam. Choose "Open With . . . " to open the dialog. Some versions of Windows may require you to hold the shift key while right-clicking.

Also try this:

In Windows Explorer (double-click My Computer), click Tools, Folder Options, then the File Types tab. Find the program that is used to open your .jpg files. Select it and click the Change button. Navigate to the program you want to open the .jpg files with and select it. Click OK.

By the way, the "Always use this program . . . " option is grayed out in this method because you're changing it permanently.

Thanks J-Kid for all of your information. Now, I did manage to find a couple of the photo programs, but none of them worked. They all told me the camera wasn't connected, so I'm beginning to think there is a problem with the cord. The thing that has me most perplexed about that is, The computer does seem to know I've got the camera plugged in and have it turned on, becuuse the empty box pops up! Now, it it were the cord, I wouldn't get the box to show either, is this true?

I have never checked the box in the window that says "always use this program" because once in awhile I would use different ones.

Try inserting a software and/or audio CD to see if the box pop up, empty or not.

That box comes up just fine, I played a CD this morning. I am thinking about trying the Re-installation disk that came with my computer, but I've never done that before! So, once I put the disk in, will it take away everything and start fresh, or does it save what you have such as your documents, pictures and such? Thank for your patience J-Kid. Oh, one more thing Itried, I found another usb port in the back of my computer and I tried the cord there. The same thing happened.

So in short, my computer is seeing the camera plugged in, but the programs are not seeing the camera plugged in! At least that is what it's looking like from here!

I just checked Nikon's website and it appears they have a driver download for that version. Have you gone to check for a current driver??

I had an old polaroid that had similar issues, once I got the new driver I was up and going again.

Also if you have a friend with a digi cam, borrow their cord and/or camera and try it on your PC. You may have to temp install their software. You don't want to use your computer rescue disk just yet. If you select the wrong option yes, it will whipe your PC clean. Some rescue disk allow you to repair damaged drivers, but I don't know if yours does. What you need is the camers install disk only, to do the re-install of the cam software/drivers. Yes, the web site is a good plase to download those things, for your model, if you don't have the original install disks.

I did have problem with one of my program for scanner.

What I did when the computer fail to detect the new hardware.

I put in the cd rom that contain the drive to run the program.

Then I go to my computer by clicking the start menu in the left bottom corner of the screen.

You will see the menu pop up you scroll up click on my computer.

You will see the my computer screen pop up.

Then I will right click on the D drive where cd rom with program located. You will see the menu pop up.

Click on open, I will search for the drive that run the program and install it.

Most of the time that fix my problem when every the computer fail to detect a new hardware.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm still dead in the water though! I did do a re-install of the disk that came with the camera, no luck there. I spent some time at the Nikon site and sent them an email to tech support. In the meantime, I guess I'll try it on another computer. The closest people I know with Digital camera and even a computer is 40 miles away. That's what i get for living out in the middle of nowhere, LOL!

Just for the heck of it, one more question. If i were to get a card reader might that work, or it is likely I will continue to have this same problem?
