"my computer" Illegal operation??

I just finished formatting my hard drive, reloading windows 98 and re-installing my periferrals and getting back online three days ago.

I installed the MSN browser software that came with my Verizon DSL package, simply for the pop up blocking.

Yesterday, Sean was online using Internet Explorer and NOW my McAffee has popped up with dozens of infected things invading my pc AND I'm getting an illegal error message everytime I click on My Computer to use the CD-Rom or find a file...

A virus scan was run and came up with nothing.
I used ctrl/alt/delete to shut down all running programs and ran scan disk and a defrag. Defrag stopped twice and said the disk was being written to.

As far as I could see NOTHING was running but explorer.

Edited to add:
If I open IE, I get bombarded by notices from McAfee that it found a file infected with something called "Backdoor-BDD".
It goes into a C:/Windows/System file first.

I've looked at Symantec and can't find anything with THAT specific name... lots of Backdoor viruses with various suffixes...

QK, it sounds like your PC has been smoking some of that ILLEGAL Jamaican bush again! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/704555_dwl.gif[/img]

You have a trojan and most virus scanners won't remove those. Install Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and SD Spybot and try using those to remove the trojan. Before you do, make sure you update each of them to their latest data files.


QK, When last have you updated your virus scanner data file? By the way, which virus scanner are you using? You mentioned McAfee, as well as, Symantec.

I use McAfee Virus Scan Online. It's totally up to date as of Tuesady. I did a complete format of my hard drive and reinstalled everything.
McAfee is installed thru the internet and is the latest version, it also does automatic updates on startup.

I've used Symantec in the past for virus removal tools, but it's not my installed virus protection.

I'll try scanning in safemode. Symantec had a tool for removing the BackDoor.Agent.B and I wasn't sure if it was the same as the -BDD???
there was a list od hundreds of backdoor viruses, but only the one removal tool.
