Traveling with a laptop

Since I've never done this before....need to ask a few questions.

If I take my laptop with me and am in a location where there is computer service in the next apt. and I have a wireless card in mine, will I be able to go online?

Also, what exactly do I need to take with me in addition to the actual laptop in the way of accessories?

if it is a secured network and you dont have a password then no, u cant gain access just by being the same range.

u either have to know the passowrd, or be accessing an unsecured network which is still an iffy thing.

meaning that even if you are in range of an unsecured network, it is always very stable or the signal is so weak it is like using dial-up

plus, I am not comfortable using other ppl's unsecured network because if them or someone else is using it that knows what they are doing, they can access your laptop as well.

You know you can buy wireless access while on the road right?

I am with bell, so I can buy my wireless time for a day or time period when I am traveling. Eliminates me having to depend on others.

Or if you have a blackberry phone with a data plan, you can use your phone as a wireless modem as well when traveling.

that's your access right there. if you have your own wireless access card, then you have your own network connection; no need to try catch into anyone elses' network in the next room.

altho if you catch a 'free wi-fi' area, you won't have to use your own card, so less airtime u haf to pay for

or am i misundertanding the question(?)

also if you are in the area of coffee shops, etc. that have free wi-fi access then like Missy said above, you are golden.

So it depends on where you are going as well.

Yeh, I do have a wireless card in my laptop....so, does that mean I can just take along that plugs it into the wall outlet and get online?

to me, that's the device i pay for monthly which slides into the card port on the laptop, and allows me to go online wirelessly by logging into my wireless data account - is that not what you're speaking of?

iz it some other somethin entirely?

i do carry my power cord with me in the bottom of the carryon, so i can plug in, instedda running my battry down, like when waiting in a airport. but other than that i don't carry any accessories.

I think this is where we are confusing JA Jewel.

There is the card device you can plug into your laptop to access your own network.

But also, JA Jewel id your laptop is wi-fi enabled then when you are on the road, say for example in an airport, as you try to connect onine your wi-fi will scan for networks. Now, in most airports they have wi-fi access to different networks. What will pop up on your screen is a link to say, Rogers Mobility. It will then allow you to purchase air time for either 1 hour, 7 hours or for the day. That is what I was referring to and then realized sistacaf was referring to a wireless card which works just as good as well.

that's totally separate from the power source tho.

I bought my wireless card when I bought my laptop. It slides into the side and I always keep it in there. I have a dell, about 5 years old. I guess that is something other than what u r talking about.....enlighten me

I believe she is confusing wireless (network) capable, with wireless access. Her computer is wireless capable, she may not have a subscriber wireless card per say.
