right, ok miz nylah, that's what i was thinking too.

if you have your own wireless <span style="font-weight: bold">access</span> card jewel, there's no need to buy wireless airtime while u on the road - you are already paying for it, by accessing the internet thru your own access card/account. some places you will see signs that say &quot;free wi-fi&quot; and in those areas, you will not have to use your own card, because there is a free network provided in that area. if the laptop is wireless-ready it can detect the presence of that free network as long as you are in range of it.


but it seems like j-kid is describing a different card, one that makes the computer capable of receiving network info - not an access card which provides you an internet connection wherever you are by acessing it thru your own airtime account.

j-kid is that right?

I would think any new Dell would already BE wireless-capable tho; built into the machine(?) with no need of a card to make it so. I know mine is, and its a old one. without the card i could still get online through any network i'm in range of cause the computer is already set up for it. i only need the card to actually access airtime thru my own wireless account.

There is the card device you can plug into your laptop to access your own network.

But also, JA Jewel id your laptop is wi-fi enabled then when you are on the road, say for example in an airport, as you try to connect onine your wi-fi will scan for networks. Now, in most airports they have wi-fi access to different networks. What will pop up on your screen is a link to say, Rogers Mobility. It will then allow you to purchase air time for either 1 hour, 7 hours or for the day. That is what I was referring to and then realized sistacaf was referring to a wireless card which works just as good as well.

i do carry my power cord with me in the bottom of the carryon, so i can plug in, instedda running my battry down, like when waiting in a airport. but other than that i don't carry any accessories.

I actually have wireless service for my guests, here in Jamaica. All they have to do is plug into the wall outlet or work off their batteries and voila!...online!

I did have to order a &quot;wireless access modem from Cable &amp; Wireless though, to make it all work.

So that is the kind of &quot;wireless&quot; card I have.

well if you go online using access from the next door apartment that would be stealing internet connection which i have never done

I've never paid for &quot;air time&quot; since I purchased the card, so I think I'm wireless capable, like j-kid said, and that's where I get lost

So, if I'm at the airport and have my wireless card in my laptop, I will not be able to get online unless I pay??....how does that work?...with a credit card, online?

you know after looking at what C &amp; W charge I would use what ever company the airport wi-fi access point recommends. Yes, you would just use your credit card to pay.

What C &amp; W charges per minute when you are outside Jamaica, you would pay for the entire day with Rogers, T-mobile, or Bell.

no honey if you already have an access card you will <span style="font-style: italic">not</span> have to buy airtime, the card will provide that access for you, provided you are in a 'hot spot' (an area that is supported by your provider, C&amp;W).

you would only have to pay if you did not have the card, and were going to utilize some &quot;local&quot; network through the computer alone with no card in it.

ETA: good point nylah - C&amp;W may well charge more to use your own access card outside of jamaica, than the local &quot;pay as you go&quot; options would be to just buy a little airtime.

no worries

I think sistacaf summed it up well in the post above since I am still a little confused about the &quot;card&quot; you have. If you have the wireless card like she said then you are good to go. No worry about paying for time used, etc.

If not, then you will definitely be accessing a local network in an airport. Dont worry about which one it is because it will self-populate once you are in range and walk you thru the process.

if its a FREE wifi area you're golden. no payin of any kind

if it's a C&amp;W network area (hot spot) then you'll pay whatever C&amp;W charges to use your access outside of ja.

if it's some other local network, then you can pay to buy some airtime while you are in that network's 'hot spot'. (to avoid potentially higher charges from C&amp;W)

so, no way to really know until you experiment as you're travelling.

i can tell you that i've carried this laptop all over in the US using my own access card with no problem (but totally forgot to check if there was a free wifi network in a de area, b4 using it - will haf to remember that!)

and am about to see if it will work in Canada next week....
