What's Up With Firewire?

The time has come to purchase a new laptop, so off to Best Buy I went.

However, as I do a lot of video editing I was looking for a laprtop that can import video footage via a firewire connection. Only to learn from the salesman that the whole firewire thing is on the way out. Only a handful of models that they carry offer a fireire port built in and the number of those models are getting smaller each day.

When I asked him if there is an even faster connection on the horizon than firewire he shrugged and said not really.

What gives? Are the manufacturers turning their backs on those that shoot and edit video?

Am I missing something here???

Yes, you certainly did,... firewire was faster than USB1.1,but now that they have USB2.0,
it is 100 times faster than USB 1.1 and faster than firewire.
USB2.2 also has the advantage of being backward compatable to USB 1.1, and cheaper to install and learn to use

Doc, you are talking Firewire 400. There is also Firewire 800, which is almost double the spead of USB-2. Also, from a sustained banwidth throughput point-of-view, Firewire 400, still beats USB-2, even though USB-2 has a raw data rate of 480Mbps. Firewire 800 beats them both.

Firewire 800 beats them both. </div></div> The problem is that they are not promoting Fw800, iu think ther say it need extra power or something seperat efrom the connetion poin.
while USB 2 power the equipment from the same connection without the need to have auxilary power supply...

I have Canon Camera with a broken card slot I can only use my laptop to trigger it. The Camera if FW and the Laptop has not FW but has Card Slot.

As a hub it looks pretty comprehensive.
Before you plunk down the funds you should ask if there are translators involved in the device, which will allow you to get firewire if you only have a USB Port.

</div></div>Doc the power requirement is least of all the problems in converting Firewire to USB. There is Bus incompatibilities, compression algorithms, bridging architectures and switching frequencies to calculate.
