Getting rid of stubborn spyware: ALTNET

Okay ..mi have annedda prablem ((J-kid)) ...

Over christmas, unbeknown to mi, Kazaa was installed on the home PC. Mi done hear bout dis ting dat it is not a good sinting seakka spyware an dem ting. So mi de-install and run Spybot - Search & Destroy

Well Spybot identified the following as spyware :-

Hkey_local_machinesoftwarealtnet

De ting is Spybot has been unable to delete it even doe it identify it.

Since then mi try the following spyware killer programme dem but to no avail:-

Never underestimate the power of an SEC filing. Last week, Brilliant Digital Entertainment, a software company based in Woodland Hills, California, released a 10,000-word statement explaining its latest activities, and the computer industry was immediately in an uproar. Prior to the filing, no one realized the extent to which Brilliant was involved with KaZaA, the popular peer-to-peer file-swapping service. Everyone knew Brilliant was using KaZaA to distribute digital ads. That it was also using KaZaA to create its own peer-to-peer network came as a complete surprise.

If you're among the many millions of people who've downloaded the KaZaA application over the past few months, you've also downloaded a similar client from Brilliant. The client is designed to connect PCs across the Internet, creating a massive peer-to-peer network that Brilliant and its partners will use to distribute songs, videos, and other digital files. In attaching to this network, the client would give you access to the digital files on offer, but it would also use your hard drive space and processing power to host such files and distribute them to other machines. Brilliant hasn't activated this peer-to-peer network, known as AltNet, but it plans to in the very near future. "The first phase will go live in four to six weeks," says Brilliant CEO Kevin Bermeister.


Bermeister insists, however, that Brilliant software sitting on your machine will not be activated unless you want it to be activated. "We will receive permission from the end user prior to making use of their resources," he says. "The product will be installed; the users will get an invitation to opt in; and when they decide to opt-in, they will become part of AltNet."

He also claims that, should you decide to join the network, you won't have to wonder how much of your processing power and hard drive space is being sapped by the software: "We'll offer a resource meter that will effectively manage and measure the system resources being used, letting you manipulate how much is available to AltNet."

Last week, most AltNet news stories said that, whereas services like KaZaA provide access to songs and videos for free, users would have to pay for digital content distributed over AltNet. On Wednesday, the New York Times wondered "why consumers would want to pay for songs on AltNet that they could already get at no charge through KaZaA." But the situation is a bit more nuanced than that. Bermeister makes it clear that Brilliant partners who distribute content over AltNet have the right to decide how they charge for that content. "It all depends on the arrangements content distributors put into place," he explains. "The content owner dictates the terms under which the content is distributed."

In all likelihood, you'll have to pay for many of the songs and videos available on AltNet, but if you give up a certain amount of your system's resources to the network, Brilliant will give you credit towards the purchase of the network's content. Will KaZaA users still be willing to use the new service? That's yet to be seen. An SEC filing can tell you a lot, but it can't tell you everything.

Removing Brilliant

If you're a Kazaa user who unwittingly downloaded the AltNet client, you can still uninstall it. "We provide an entry in the uninstall programs menu for anyone to use and uninstall Brilliant," says Bermeister. The procedure may differ slightly depending on when you downloaded Kazaa and what operating system you're using, but, generally, you can uninstall most of Brilliant's software by removing a program called "b3d Projector" using your Windows "Add/Remove Programs" wizard.

The first article neva work fi mi but in the second article, I downloaded one the removal tools refered to in the post. But when mi run di tool, ei noh remove a ting.

So mi gave all the user ids/accounts on the computer administrator privileges...den run di tool, KazaaBegone and all dem spyware removal tools mi did list above from each an every user id (a long boring process). Afta dat, di computa clean.

A tell yu at dis rate..mine sharp mi tun tekkie ..den again dat coulda neva happen [img]/forums/images/graemlins/704555_dwl.gif[/img]

I remove kazaa from my pc years ago. Kazaa is infested with virus. I say its breeding ground for virus rasta.

Dat ting cyaa give up 10 different virus living on your harddrive fi months before you even realize it.
