thanks for much for your input. i have made the decision to switch and am waiting for my "kit" to arrive. i would not have known the part about changing out things in my phone box if not for you. 
apparently, you can only connect one phone without doing the switch out.
btw, someone mentioned a concern about 911. according the website, that is no longer an issue.
will keep you posted when i get the equipment. but, for now, i am psyched about getting unlimited calling in the us and canada (watch out, you canucks) along with voice mail, caller id, call waiting, etc. for the same price i give to sbc for monthly service with caller id only!
