Ok, I know there was a discussion on this at some point, but I'm seriously looking into this for my mom.

I need to know is it easy enough for a computer illiterate 79 year old woman to use?

Anyone who has one or has seen one in use, please tell me what you think.

Mom used to use a DOS based computer back in the day, so she's not <span style="font-style: italic">that</span> bad. But I'm still looking for simplicity as far as the reading part. We can do the ordering for her if that's more complicated.

She has macular degeneration, so I need her to be able to get large print stuff. So many of her favorites can't be found in large print.

Kindle is the first of many such a device. You can bet that Apple, Sony and the rest are busy working in new devices to capture the market. I think Sony already offers such a device.

It may be a nice device however for someone like your mom QK. Perosnally, there needs to be a way for cheaper books to be offered electronically. I pick up many of my used paperbacks at my local Goodwill for 50 cents. $10 a shot for a book on a Kindle is not in my future anytime soon. Not to mention the initial investment plus the extended warranty, which due to the nature of this product I would advise people to get.

The font siizes can be enlarged if you wish.

Ever thought that it is a good product for people who cannot read?
It actually has the capabillity to verbalize the text. So it will possibly widen the availabliilty ofliturature,while reducing the need for paper. Now if they could just make it full colour, graphics,and with Tv reception it would intrest me

1) Does the titles you buy have an experation date (soh yu caa read dem noh more)?

2) Can I crank up the resolution manually, in the very bright sunlight (like when on the beach)?

3) Is it only in Black and White graphics?

4) How robust is it since it thin:
...A) will it bruk inna yuh bag, or purse?
...B) Will di screen scratch easily?

Thanks Gen, I will look there too.

For my mom to get large print books, they are usually hard cover, $35 new... and her faves don't always come in large print.
There's a whole series by her favorite mystery/thriller author that she can't read anymore cos her eyes are so bad. And I've only found a few of them in large print.

So anyway, she has 4 sons, 2 daughters and 9 grandkids who can cough up the $10 a book. So THAT's not an issue.

Sturdy? Mom's not a big beach person, she doesn't fly anywhere. She usually reads at home either in her favorite chair, the dining room table (her &quot;office&quot; :grin) or in bed.

The most important thing for her would be ease of use.

Yes Milo. Sony does have one out as well. I am a mac user, so I think their version would be simple to use, but DEFINITELY more $$.

It is only black &amp; white, and it will store something like 1500 titles. You buy it, you own it.

Mom's a die hard reader. Books, newspapers, magazines. She's always devoured reading material.

Audio books are cool in their own way, but reading the words is different.

I'm a reader myself and have listened to books on tape and read the same story in a book. The written word is always better.
You get into the book and your mind hears the words or visualizes the scene where audio doesn't quite get it right.

Also reading keeps the mind sharp. She does large print crosswords and sodoku as well. Her memory isn't as great as it used to be but she's still very much &quot;with it&quot;.

Eventually audio books may be her only option, but until that time, we'd like to keep her reading.

I have had a kindle for nearly a year now and thoroughly enjoy it.
Yes you can change the font size and your books or periodical subs last forever. Amazon stores your transactions and allows you to reload when needed. The newest version has the verbalization feature which be very attractive for those with eye strain et al.
It is a delicate device, but I have not encountered any mechanical breakdowns as yet, which I would consider the weak link. You press several buttons to navigate the reading.

anasiman, thank you. You say several buttons to navigate reading, do you mean while reading she'd need to use several buttons? How so?
