Embarrassing Problem

I am upgrading my computer (9 yeaar old desktop to brand new laptop). The problem is that I hate to let go my old desktop. It runs on Windows ME and only has 128 mb of ram but it has served me well over the last decade. There is really nothing wrong with it. It still works fine for surfing simple sites and checking email etc... . The issue is that I was using AGV Free Version as my anti virus software and they have just posted a message saying that they are no longer supporting Windows ME. And I have not found another free (not willing to spend money to protect this machine) anti virus program that will support such an old computer. I even thought of switching to Ubuntu but even that OS requires 256 mb of ram.

Like I said I don't want to spend any money on this old clunker but I hate to throw it out. Perhaps I will just use it to surf and check email solely on my new laptop.If it gets a virus or two or a hundred, who cares, it is at the end of its life anyway, or is there a quick and easy solution you folks now about. I already have a boat anchor and don't need another one.

The problem is that even the price of the memorywil get you a better machine right now.
I don't know anysoftware presently that wil work on 128meg ram machine.

Milo, I have an old windows machine (bought in 2000, running 98) with a decent amount of memory in it, more than enuff to get you over 256mb.
Not sure if we use the same type of memory, but if is the same, I can mail it to you cheap enuff.

Hey QK. Thanks for that offer!

When I purchased this computer back in 2000 I purchased it with RD RAM which was suppose to be (according to the salesman back then) the newest and best at the time. Well as things go RD RAM never took off and it was SD RAM that ended up ruling the day. My guess is you probably have SD RAM as it is by far the most popular, my RD RAM is sort of like the Sony Betamax or the HD DVD of its day I'm afraid. If you know for sure that it is RD RAM you have I may be interested in your offer perhaps but if you're not sure then I won't bother as I really don't want to spend too much time or effort in upgrading such an old computer other than perhaps finding a virus program that I can download for free to keep it running safely for a year or two longer.

If the system can run ME it should be able to run Ubuntu.

I'm trying to post pictures from PHOTOBUCKET but am having issues linking them to this site for some reason. I'l keep trying until have have to leave for work in a few minutes.

CEW, that is what I thought but I think it has to do with the fact that 128 mg of RD RAM is all that is required to run Windows ME but maybe Ubuntu is reading it and saying it needs to be 256mb. Anyway, I may be wrong. Can't waste too much more time on this until the weekend as I have work to do but I'll post back.

Rambus RAM should be dirt cheap, so if the board can support 256MB, you might be able to get 2x128 module on eBay for next to nothing.

I did not knoe that they were still using rambus when Me was in?

My cousin gave me her big heavy moniter 5 years ago I think. Nothing was wrong with it, I just wanted a flat screen. I called the library, they said they would take it.

<span style="font-weight: bold">OK OK!</span> I am going to post my last jamaicans.com post using the old desktop on the weekend and then I'll take it out behind the shed and put it out of its misery.

Reminds me of the gut wrenching scene from that old classic Disney movie Old Yeller.
