I bought my Dell Inspiron laptop 8 years ago when 256mb was considered alot of memory. It is heavy and I can't upgrade to more than 516MB RAM. I am intrigued by the new mini laptops/netbooks. Has anyone had any experience with them?

Re: Netbooks and Mini laptops - Anyone using these
I recently bought an Acer One with a 10" screen. It has a 6-cell battery so I can work on it up to 7-8 hours without having to charge it. It has an odd button - you press on the left edge for left-click and right edge for right-click. That always feels a bit awkward to me for some reason. Also performance is a tad sluggish, but I can upgrade the memory which might help matters.
That's all I can think of for the moment. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask.

BlackStar, how much Ram are you running? What do you use it for? I am thinking of using it mainly for web surfing. If I need a word processor I would use Wordpad.

Re: Netbooks and Mini laptops - Anyone using these
I have a Inspiron 700m notebook and I find it too small to deal with on a constant bases. The screen is 12.1" which is fine if u are doing nothing more than surfing and checking emails.
the biggest issue I have with it is the keyboard size. Although I have gotten used to it from years of use, it still will give me hand cramps when I use it for too long.
So going any smaller than the model I have just doesnt appeal to me unless I was using the netbooks just for travel and fun purposes. Then I could live with the keyboard size issue.

I use the netbook for surfing, posting on forums (so use the keyboard a lot), e-mail, viewing videos, and playing MP3s. The keyboard is OK for me. The netbook came with MS Works pre-installed which is sufficient for light office tasks.
When surfing, some larger JPEG files don't display in their entirety. I've also noticed with my Bittorrent application that the preferences dialog box is too big for the screen. Fortunately it's just the OK & Cancel buttons that are hidden.

Thanks. Let me know the ram? I will probably use it similar to you, surfing and maybe some light word processing. I am not planning to use it as my main PC.
I hate MS Works. I understand most of these machines are a scaled down version of XP. Does it have Word Pad or did they strip that out?Out of Many One People Online
