I tried it last summer, and loved it for the most part, only for some reason, another site I frequent, I wasn't able to upload photos. I ended up deleting it as I was down to 9% free space and couldn't defrag. I deleted a whole lot of stuff and things are good again. (mostly photos, I shoot in large size). Anyway...

After reading the Mozilla posts last week, I figure I have the space now so I went and got it again. I had problems with it, it would show some sites all messed up, pages didn't appear as they were, but all mumbo jumbled. Do you think something went wrong in the installation, or was thre another problem? Liz, I know you swear by it, what do you think? Anyone else? I do like the browser because it seemed faster, but I deleted it because of the display problem. I still want it though, LOL...can you see my confusion!

Reby, do your pages ever get hijacked using Firefox? Not pop ups but the page just changes??

Ok a few things on Mozilla and FireFox.

They are both good web browsers but no matter what browser you use it must be setup properly. By default both products are set to deny automatic installs of software from websites. This is all well and good but the default install doesnt come with things like a java plugin. (last I read it was because Sun systems wouldnt let Mozilla/FireFox come bundled with their java viewer)

This causes some sites to not work at all (the more a website depends on java the more broken the website will seem). What I suggest is only turning on 'auto install softare' when you are trying to get a specific plugin for FireFox. The rest of the time leave it OFF to prevent malware from creeping into your PC because you visited a page with an auto-install program.

As far as pages appearing to be broken. Not all websites are compatible with FireFox/Mozilla. This isnt anybody's fault except the webmaster of the website. I don't see many pages that have problems, usually its just extra spaces where a table ends or some-such. What you are probably seeing as a problem is the blocking of what is called remote images. Its common for webpages to sell ads, and many of these ads appear as an image. FireFox/Mozilla allow you to block any remote images (I think its 'on' by default).

For example - if Jamaicans.com sold ads to a website called xyzabc.com, usually the ads are loaded from xyzabc.com's server, and not from Jamaicans.com. Because the image is not being loaded off Jamaicans.com FireFox/Mozilla will deny the image to be loaded because its not hosted locally on the Jamaicans.com domain. Because of this some sites appear to have large blank spaces, usually where ads are.

So if you get some strange looking sites, first make sure you have the right plugins to view the site, then make sure you havent blocked any remote images (although its kinda nice to block some remote images to get rid of ad heavy pages, so you can get right to the content on the page).

You'll notice that when I post images I usually mention what site the images are hosted on. This is because some users block remote images but often want to see the images in trip reports. By giving them the domain name where I have the pictures hosted they can easily add 'allow images from snapfish.com' so they can view images in the trip reports.

IM, you may need to install some plugins that you had for IE, like Flash, Java, etc.

So far I haven't found a site that doesn't work or display readably in Firefox but maybe pages that use ActiveX controls or something might not, since those are MS things.

I have Thunderbird too and would love to start using it...but i have used Pegasus Mail for years and cannot move my folders/mail/etc to Thunderbird [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

This is sort of understandable, in a way, but....

My weblog site was the one who suggested getting Mozilla. I was having a little problem getting started using IE, but it was so long ago I can't remember exactly what, but they suggested it so I went and got it.

The site I had a problem uploading photos to was Miyard, I think I was using the direct upload from my hard drive(again, long ago, short memory)...

So, then was when I lost space and was frantic to find some, anywhere, and got rid of Mozilla (was my photo's all along, lol, yeah...)

After reading all the raves (here) about the Mozilla, and remembering how I liked it so, I reinstalled it the other day. Now, the site that shows up all out of whack is my weblog, which was the one that recommended using Mozilla in the first place! So, was I mising a plug in? Do you think I just ended up with a download that didn't work? Should I give Mozilla another whirl? I did notice it was faster. When yer dealin with dial up, anything that spells 'faster' is a welcome sight!

Thanks for any advice, I am ready to give Mozilla another try!!!

By the way, has everyone voted for Jamaicans.com at least once?

Dunno IM, I'd have to load the weblog site using the same browser & operating system to see if I can duplicate the errors. I'd suggest FireFox over Mozilla if you want to try a new browser (same company, different product see www.mozilla.org for downloads).

ugh, dialup....icky! Once you go broadband you can never go back.

Usually when you are missing a plugin you will see a framed 'Click here to download Java plugin' with a puzzle looking icon. Only download these from TRUSTED sources and only when you know what is being installed. If you need Java then only install Java. Use extreme caution installing plugins and try to avoid websites that try to install any non-standard plugins.

This is how sites trick users into installing nasty spyware, adware, malware on home pc's, since most users just click 'Yes' anytime that little annoying box pop's up. So just be aware of what you are installing and only get plugins when something doesnt work on a page that you MUST use/see/whatever.

I tried getting DSL out in the bush, but it ain't happening. Maybe someday! Ok I'm willing to try Firefox when i get home tonite, I'm at the library voting for Jamaicans.com top 5! Had some time to kill and yes I love this fast connection here, wish I could have it like this at home!

OK, there is a difference.

In Firefox, the first two articles (Lake Superior and 3 Stooges) are next to the photo of the day whereas in IE they are below.

This makes me have to scroll horizontally in FF to read those.

The difference seems to be in the way that the two browsers handle spans. In looking at the page source, it seems that you've instructed the main ice image to float to the left, which it does in Firefox, but IE does not support that feature so ignores it and puts the text below.

Do you update the blog using forms or do you create the HTML directly?

OK, Liz, I did instruct the imnage to stay left, I'll go put it in the center, I didn't think of that one! And, yes, that is what I saw when I viewed the page with Mozilla...THANKS!

PS..yes I'm just using forms, I wish I knew more, I have this very cool heron flying into the sunset that I've been trying to make work, lol, guess I'll stick with the one standing on the main page!
