Well, they still use some Unix, which is the mother to Linux. They are not much different than many of the other companies out there (it is a wait and see game of how many will make that first step). By the way "free Linux" is an oxymoron, since Linux by its nature is free. They can charge for servicing a customized version, but they are not allowed to charge for the software. As you know, it is human nature to be mistrustful of what they don't know, of fully understand. Some out there see Linux as an improved back-to-the future thing, not remembering or knowing that Unix gave peace-of-mind for many many years as a command line operating system for many of today's large corporations and universities.
we have a ton of stuff running on Redhat linux. we have to use the commercial supported version because we need to be able to get the required support. we cannot depend on having somebody in house being able to fix stuff no matter how bright our people are.
btw. My motto is "if it was important it would be running on the mainframe" zOS still rules

How is a locked linux any different from a locked Microsoft ? or a locked what ever apple uses ?
I asked this as i am truly ignorant of things computer... I sit through presentations by companies promising the moon in terms of information and deliverables ... I buy into the hardware concept... better mousetrap if you like ...then i ask how can i see it catch mice in real time at displayed on my desk monitor or the big screen that dominates the office area in real time.. they speak language of protocols add nasuea... of concepts i dont care about and at the end i do my gordian knot moment...." Stop will i see it on my desk monitor yes or no?.. the answer is always" maybe".. To which i reply "maybe is no in my book"
software is like SAP, human remains, life coaches, or like Marx's writing ...take a easy thing and complicate it. And the people who run these things think they are not what they are a support function. Business has thus become process focuses rather than project focus...
I use software as a tool not because i like +++king with computers...
Basically, it has to do with the way the system boots up, and how it recognizes and saves the password. Windows can be more easily bypasses with a boot CD/DVD, or special tools, but not so easy with Unix / Linux. The Linux system was designed with security, being a top priority from the beginning. Also the individual files and folder protection is handled differently from Windows. Windows has gotten better by following some of Unix's principles, but it is still not there yet, and they do things in a very bloated cumbersome and less efficient way that sucks di life out of your resources (memory, etc). Bottom line in any system you want: Security, reliability, robustness, and speed.
