win 98 machine does not boot regularly

Issue: 3 yr old has taken upon herself to shut down the computer she shares withher brother. She shuts down PC while CD Rom still playing o/.

Now the PC takes about 3 -4 tries before it will boot in safe mode.

Is it time to just let the machine die a natural death (it is 6 yrs old)?

If we decide to buy a new machine with XP on it, will it be handle her improper shutdowns?

She is supervised when near the PC but she is also fast & wants to show 'she can do it herself' o/

Also should we decide on a new machine, where can I just buy the desktop (we would not need a new monitor)

Well from what ya said its probably a faulty power supply or the hard drive is about toast. Win98 is getting to be quite dated so an upgrade may be in order.

I would advise moving the PC away from your daughters reach if she likes to hit the power button. Yeah XP will deal with it, but its a very bad habbit (you work 4 hours on a document and she shows you she can make you go to bed by turning off your pc...not so cute anymore eh? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] lol).

Not sure what you expect the PC to do, but it probably wont cost much unless your kids are into the high end video games. Just don't go crazy on the processor speed, ram, hard drive size and you'll do ok.

Miss R knows better than to touch Mommy's laptop or the desktop we use - that is why they have their own ( our old one)

The pc will be used by an 8 yr old & a 3 yr old so dont need too much. PC games, disney.com. pbs.org and barbie.com
