Bad or currupted device drivers can cause this issue and it is simple to bypass. Before it gets to the blue screen, is there anything else shown BEFORE the blue screen? If so, post it here in order.

Then you also have root stuff that currupts the hard drive big time and the recovery disk may or may not work. No backup? I bet you learn now.

Another very tragic case of not imaging yuh hard drive (C: partition) wen it was running good. Just, get in line behing Kia, there will bi more people lining up behind unnu also.

okay, moving right along

I was actually smart enough to copy several programs (in addition to all my photos, website files, etc.) when I was still able to boot in safemood

the BIG tragedy is that I did have music on the hard drive that was never stored to another location

Okay I have one, what model number?
It will help me to test some things.
Maybe you can fix it by going into the BIOS and see what is turned on or off.

Dell Inspiron 1200 (I think) ... I'll have to double-check when I get home tonight

is the BIOS the place where I went to change the boot order? <span style="font-style: italic">I told you I was hardware-illiterate</span>

and, in the meantime, can I copy .mp3 files from the laptop to cd (via dos) provided I can get to the directory to see what's there?

Yep, driver conflict. Problem is now you can't get to safe mode to fix it. I think I read that you can boot of the windows CD? If you can do that, let me know.

Otherwise, one alternative is to download Knopix on another computer. Burn the CD and then you'll be able to recover anything you want off the hard drive. Knopix is a flavor of unix and when download the cd image, it creates a bootable copy of unix. Once you boot off it, you mount the drive and can access the stuff on it.

Alternative to that is take the hard drive to a friend's pc and let them put your drive as a 'slave' and you'll be able to copy stuff off it. It usually becomes like 'd' or 'e' drive.

I can get to windows setup, but still get the damn <span style="font-weight: bold">ControlSet Key</span> error when choosing c: (going the repair route)

Yes here is what you do before you do anything else.
The Dell Inspiron tend to hold stuff in memory long enough to cause more problems when you are trying to fix things.

Plug the system out. Remove the battery for about 20 minutes and than put it all back together. When you boot try booting from the Hard Drive first.
Then if that fails you have to try to recover with your re-install disk of if you have DL something else.
