I finally broke down and bought MS FrontPage to try to design a website.
Anybody here use it? I'm off to a good start (I think), but I can see I'm going to need some help.
I don't use Frontpage but I have some advice for ya. The first thing you should be thinking about is a basic template for your site. What fields you want, placement, colors, and any images you want to use. The first mistake many starting web designers make is to not keep the site uniform. You want your site to flow, colors, layout all the same or a variation thereof. I highly suggest you do the KISS method (Keep it simple stupid). Once you have the basic's done the rest is just adding your text formatting and content.
I love dreamweaver because of the split views. Looking at a WYSIWYG view, and a raw code view is how I do it. Don't worry about front page extensions, just stick to html or even asp scripts using SSI. You can find a ton of free code to learn from on the net. One of my favorite spots is http://www.hotscripts.com/ASP/index.html for bits of code...it really helps to learn this stuff if you can see an example.
But again before you get all fancy, design a basic template and build all pages from that. I find that just getting the template the way I want it takes about as much time as adding the content. So don't feel like you need to rush through the template...its a bad idea. Take your time and get the layout the way you want it, then start building your site. Its a lot faster this way vs building a site, then re-doing everything 4 times until you get it the way you want it. Trust me, been there, done that! lol
If in doubt fire up google and do some simple searches. There is a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips!
OH my gosh Rebycman! Thank you so so much!!
I am taking your advice to heart. I'm going to sit down later today and maybe lay it out on paper (at least make notes of what I want)...
