If someone gives me a laptop, is there something in it that if I go on the internet at home that will identify where I live or where the laptop is being used?

YES de minute yuh tunn it on it have a tracker zeroed in on your position.
It may even have a recorder so yuh betta kip real quiet when yuh have ee on tuh.

If you have spyware that is on your PC, that is one of the ways that I know they can tell where you live, by extracting information with something like a key-logger, or actually get in and hack around in your PC to look at your personal info.

You can install a firewall to block a lot of stuff from being sent out without you giving permission.

Other than that, they can only see your IP address, which gives them the region of the country that you are located. If the IP is registered to your home adress or business address then they can easily find out the registered address of the owner. One other way they can tell, is if you are using the laptop from home, and you have a fixed IP address at your house, then the person knows that whenever they see that IP address it is you (at home). Sonetimes if you use a router (and dont manually log on each time), even though the IP address is dynamically assigned, the router can stays logged into the same, modem assigned, general IP address on the modem side of the firewall/router since some router can keeps the PPPoe in the log-on state all the time.

If you are asking if GPS technology is built into laptops? Not to the best of my knowledge, unless it is done illegally or by law enforcement. There is software that you personally can install, along with an external GPS receiver that gives you GPS function for traveling. GPS is mostly line-of sight however, but can utilize wireless technology to extent its range if you are inside a building.

The one technology that I know is capable, and increasingly has the technology built in, is the cell phone industry. The function can be turn on and off at will anytime. It is active even if the phone is off, as long as the battery is installed in the unit. It does not matter if you are inside or outside of the building. More and more cell phones will have that function in the future.
