A hack is simply a workaround.

britisha, I am not J-Kid, but perhaps I can address some of your questions.

Your physical safety depends primarily on Mr. Bad guy being able to find you. You make this really easy for Mr. Bad Guy, by posting your real name, address, etc in your profile or linking to places where this information is available. Even if your physical information is not explicitly posted you can make yourself locatable by giving away other bits of information, (eg. "I work at a primary school in X city", "I am Y old", etc.) which, when combined can produce a bigger picture.

If you avoid you avoid giving away this info Mr. Bad Guy is stuck with attacking you using your IP address. Bulletin boards like this one don't reveal your IP address to the regular public - only to mods and admins. However, if Mr. Bad Guy is sufficiently motivated and sufficiently knowledgeable it is not that difficult to obtain the IP address of a actively participating boardite.

So, Mr. Bad Guy knows your IP address - now what? He can use geographic locators to figure out your general area. This isn't extremely useful, especially if your general area is somewhere like "New York".

He can also try to attack your machine. As long as you use decent firewall protection, antivirus protection, and a bit of sense about what you download and accept over the internet you should be safe.

Here is my take:

Why worry I am pretty sure X is making the board as technically safe as possible. It is persons who are bent on doing bad things want to do it I am sure they will let nothing bother them and try as hard as they possibly can to defeat all the security that X can buy.

The main weakness on this site is not from crackers. It is from the human element, especially the persons who possess certain privileges.

I know personally at least three moderators who have tried to destroy more than one person's private life by inventing and spreading scurrilous rumors about their targets.

I know of one moderator who used to capture and keep people's IP Address.

I know of moderator(s) are the most racist, biased and bigoted persons on the board, but it doesn't harm their security clearance.

Then we come to the joe and jane blow that are the friends, agents and family members of these so-called moderators. The ones who feed them with the info they need to carry on their dirty deeds. If joe or jane blow is careless with personal or potentially dangerous info then it is no need worrying about a cracker, you already provided the grist for the mills.

The bottom line is, if one logs on daily, participate in the fora with an open mind, a clear conscience and respect for his/her fellow boardite, then one should have no problems.
It is very unlikely that enough of your personal information will fall into the hands of even the most determined cracker if it did not originate from you lips or fingers.
