HD TV connection

Back in the place again... hello all [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

OK I need some feedback on those that know about HD quite well. What connection is needed to recieve High Definition (HD) broadcast. I know the USA already has this technology but backward UK won't get it until 2006 when Sky launches it's HD broadcast via it's new set top box.

I am hearing rumours that you need a DVI, HDMI or Component connection to be able to connect HD boxes or DVDs etc. to recieve HD.

I was informed that two things are needed, a screen resolution of 1000 pixel or higher and 720 horizontal scan and an appropriate connection at the back of the TV to enable HD quality picture and sound.

So which is needed and which is a rip-off.
1. DVI - HD picture quality
2. HDMI - HD picture and sound quality
3. Component - Those Y Pr Pb phone plugs at the rear of some TVs and DVDs.

First of all - Why use DVI? This allows a Digital connection from the STB to the TV/Projector eliminating any unecessary analog to digital conversions and keeping the signal digital as long as possible or keeping it digital all the way. Almost all Set Top Boxes use DVI-D and do not carry any analog signal. A DVI-D cable is all you will usually require, not DVI-I. HDTV capable Rear Projection HDTV's (RPTV's) have a maximum resolution of 1920x1080i @60Hz and should only require a single link cable, as do almost all DVI equipped displays. Plasma screens and Flat panels can have higher (or lower) resolutions and refresh rates and could use a Dual link cable, however, a Set Top Box is not likely to support Dual Link connections anyway, so a Dual link cable could still be a waste. We are certainly trying to keep track of what the STB (Set Top Box) manufacturers are doing. Of the Boxes either out, or coming are the Samsung TS160, T165, Zenith SAT520, Sony SAT-HD200, Toshiba DST-3100 and RCA DTC-200..............

Hey J-Kid thanks a million. To tell you the truth I bought a Samsung 1080i rear projection and it has that HD ready logo on it. I was told it is the same as a HD TV since the technology won't hit the UK until 2006.

I know that "most" HDTVs have a HDMI connection at the back and some with the DVI connection at the back. I was also told that the DVI connection is the older version to the HDMI and that the DVI only recieves HD picture quality but no HD sound, one has to connect audio phono for that. The HDMI on the other hand which is the upgrade/alternative to DVI carries both HD picture and sound quality/technology.

Now some "HD Ready" TVs in Britain do not have either the DVI or HDMI connection like the one I bought above, but the store and manufacturers claims that one can get HD picture and sound quality via the Y Pr Pb component connection also/instead???? The screen resolution is 1080 so it will support the HD picture.

Basically I am doubtful as to whether one can get HD quality from a component connection as opposed to a digital connection such as HDMI when Sky satellite launches their new HD transmission via their sky box - (satellite box.

What's your view on this J-Kid?

I wasn't able to respond promptly but you know your technical views are valuable to me anyway.

I have done some searches and found this web site that sort of wraps it all up for me.

The Y cable connection known as the "Component" connection over here in Britain (Y, Pr, Pb) are analogue and not digital as you already know, and is of course "dodgy"/suspect.

The good news is a set top box can be added to enable more features for a "HD Ready" TV as opposed to a HDTV which has an internal ATSC tuner/decoder.
