She laugh when I said to ask people not to share the file. You would be surprized how many honest people are out there and will comply, if you ask politely. The point is, you want to minimize the sharing, but at this point you can't eliminate the potential of such act.

How it works
Each user of PGP has a public and a private key. They are generated in matched pairs: a public key only ever works with its twin private key.

A user's public key is not a secret and can be distributed widely. Our public keys are available via the links on the right. A public key is used in two ways:

Alice can authenticate a signed message from Bob using his public key. If the message matches Bob's public key then Alice can be sure that the message came from Bob.
Alice can send a secure message to Bob by encrypting the message using Bob's public key. The only person who can decrypt the message is Bob.

A user's private key however must be kept secret, and is protected by a pass phrase (like a pass-word but longer). A private key also has two uses:

Bob can send an authenticated message to Alice by signing it with his private key. Since Bob is the only person who has his private key (and the pass phrase that protects it), Alice knows that if the message matches Bob's public key, then it must have been sent by Bob.

Bob can read a secure message sent by Alice by decrypting it with his private key.

Where? Basically PGP uses "keys" to secure a message or messages between two persons. This way it is ensuring that the message is read by the person that has the right 'key'.

With Wimpy player, visitors won't have to click and guess. There's no need to futz with an external program like Quitcktime, Windows Media or Real. Wimpy is based on the Macromedia Flash plugin, which is "standard issue" on nearly every computer -- so visitors won't have to do anything special to listen and/or watch your media, and can't download the file either.

Encryption is a complicated matter for the novice. It is difficult to grasp. Once you do grasp it, you'll wonder what was so difficult to understand in the first place. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

In the following explanation, I am going to forego accuracy and focus on clarity.

Encryption allows you to mash up a file so that it cannot be decrypted back to its original form without a passkey. Once it is decrypted, it is usable by anyone. It is only unusable in its encrypted form.

For example, I can encrypt the phrase "I love my life." into "^o i3l#e" -- which would be meaningless gibberish to anyone that doesn't have the passkey to decrypt it back to "I love my life."

Encrypting your file and sending it to someone is safe if you trust the person you are sending it to. If that person proves untrustworthy....

The only way to guarantee that your songs aren't shared is if they're really lousy and no one wants to hear them. If they're really good, it's doubtful you'll be able to control their distribution once it enters the Internet's public domain.
