Re: Java Runtime Environment
As I understand it, distribution of, and enhancement to, Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine was stopped as a result of MS's settlement with Sun. However, support will be continued until 12/31/07.
The Java Runtime Environment is what Sun calls their version of the Java runtime part of their Java machine.
Oversimplified, Java is a programming language; programs written in Java are executed by a subsystem of your browser. In other words, Java applications wait on Websites for you to visit, then are downloaded onto your machine and run by the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
If you don't have the JRE on your machine, Java apps will be executed by Microsoft's Virtual Machine until 12/31/07; then they'll stop working until you download and install the JRE from Sun.
What's it good for? I'd have to know what Websites you visit and what you do there; Java apps are pushed to your machine by Websites. I know that if you go to these Websites that host little games, like Yahoo! Games, for instance, a lot of those games are Java.
