Urghhhhhhhhh Pop ups

J Kid, I can't promise you a BBQ like Ivoree or a new car like (H)AnnA(H), heck I can't promise you anything but I do need your help. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I have a firewall. I have popup blockers (yes they are on). I have Norton Antivirus. Why am I getting popups to adult and gambling sites? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] What can I do to stop them?

I wasn't seeing any until the other day. I have no clue how and what got itself attached to my PC.

check to see if any spyware may have been downloaded. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I use spybot to check for spyware periodically on my machine..

In my experience, Spybot S&D isn't enough by itself. I have always had to supplement it with Ad-Aware. On the other hand, the Microsoft AntiSpyware I'm using on some machines seems to be doing a nice job all by itself.

Probably some spyware proggie installed along with a program u installed.

Just don't trust Microsoft's AntiSpyware products to do the job by itself. Recently they removed Claria (aka Gator) from their list of spyware/malware....see here for details: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1834607,00.asp

Are popups occuring even when you are not surfing the web? If they do it is probably a spyware problem.

That's not entirely accurate. Microsoft AntiSpyware detects and removes the Claria products just fine. The only thing they've changed is the default action on detection; Anti-Spyware defaults to "Ignore." The user just uses the drop-down control to switch the action to "Remove" (or "Quarantine," but I don't know why you'd want to do that), and the spyware is removed.

One has to go through the list and change most of those drop-down controls to "Remove" from "Quarantine" anyway, so it's not like it's even an extra step.

The quote from the article to which you linked:

"According to the results published by Howes, four different builds of the Windows AntiSpyware beta detected the Claria products, but the default recommendation was 'ignore.'"

Mozilla over here....with free firewall downloaded ..and not a pop up in site....

unless I am at JA.com...but that's okay ..the ones on here are not offensive.....

never had to run adware too...just used the google blocker and that is enuff..

now if this ooman would just stop talking about fish
