WINFIX2005 pop up is driving me mad...

Help Help! I keep getting this window opening, which keeps asking me if I want to download it. I go to close it and get at least 3 more pop ups before I can move on to more and better things.

I googled winfix2005, and came across many suggestions to stop it, but it keeps coming back, I've read other's are having this same problem too.

How to stop this thing once and for all???

Ya that one can be nasty. First of all have you run Adaware and Spybot search and destroy? You can also check for SurfAccuracy and WinFixer2005 in add/remove programs, if found uninstall them (don't worry if it's not there).

What OS are you running and do you run AV and Firewall too?

I think it is also causing other problems, like the other night I lost my keyboard function!

I've run Spybot several times. It doesn't show up in the add/remove programs, or anywhere....

I though I had adaware, but can't find it, but I'll go get it now.

I'm running XP, and use both windows and firefox, and it pops up in both. I am on dialup but there is some little firewall something that came with this thing. What's AV?

AV = Anti Virus

No idea what firewall you are running but I'd advise you install ZoneAlarm. You can find it here: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

I suggest any PC connected to the internet has an active firewall (hardware or software), Anti Virus, and at least 2 of the above spyware scanners. As I've said before a layered defense is the best thing you can do to protect yourself online.

So Adaware advertises free trial...

I go download it, run it and it has a list of stuff it wants to get rid of, but wants me to pay 29.95 first? Is there a free adaware anywhere?

What was one of the good free antivirus out there? I remember a post about that last winter or so...

I have expired Norton, but after listening to so many people have problems with their updates, I decided to forget it. Playhing with fire maybe, however, I NEVER open any attachements...

I think you downloaded the wrong program. There are several other similar products that do in fact charge ya money to use it. Double check the links I posted above to make sure you got the right program.

Anti-Virus - I suggest AVG by grisoft.com (sent ya a PM with more details) that's free for home users.

The funny thing about norton is several users have said that Norton was the program that installed winfix2005 (without permission) on their PC. For some norton is a good product but I've never had anything but problems with it. The last 2 times I installed it on clients PC's it hosed their internet connection to the point that I had to go out and fix it. =

Did you install the three scanners I listed and run a scan? (Adaware, Spybot, and Microsoft's product) Did any of them find the winfix2005?

Its probably like Compry's...something in your windows startup that runs every time you boot. What tends to happen is you uninstall then reboot and a hidden file in your startup re-installs what you just uninstalled. Nasty cycle eh? It cant hurt to check your startup...

Start > Run > type in msconfig and hit enter

You can then tell me what's in your startup and I can tell ya what ya don't need. Or you can use a site like http://www.processlibrary.com/ to define what each file is so you know if you can remove it safely or not.

You may also want to read Compry's thread here in the tech forum to get more info on editing your startup.

Well, it's been quiet now since that last post. I have 2 of the downloads and am working on the 3rd, gonna do that one in a little bit. I read Compry's thread, looking for stuff to delete from my startup, lol...but they were completly different. OK, here's what's all on mine...

Ok first of all lets clean up some the mess we've made along the way. Since your Norton is expired go ahead and uninstall it (Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs) then reboot your PC and install AVG as discussed. Once AVG is installed go ahead and reboot the PC again and launch AVG Control Center, run the auto-update to get the latest definitions of known virus and run a full system scan. If you don't have time for a full scan go ahead and at least get Norton uninstalled, and AVG installed and updated. After we are all done tweaking you can start a scan and go do something else (or set it to run when you go to sleep).

Next lets take care of your startup programs.

ccApp - Remove - Norton AntiVirus 2003 (May be already gone if you uninstalled Norton).
ccRegVfy - Remove - Again more Norton files.
eventsvc - Remove & Uninstall Real One Media player. It is notorious for eating up the system resources of even the fastest computers. My suggestion is to uninstall Real Media player in its entirety. Of course this means you cant watch any media in Real format. Or you can just uncheck the box in msconfig and just launch Real One Media Player when you want to watch a clip in Real format.
jusched - Leave it - a process installed alongside Sun Microsystem's Java2 suite and, and checks for/installs Java updates.

point32 - Microsoft Intellimouse console and add an easy to access icon to the tray bar. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference
lxbtbmgr - Lexmark System Tray application that enables scan or fax functions to run directly from the printer via the buttons. Can be launched from a desktop shortcut. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference.
fm3032 - FaxMan integrates complete fax send and receive support into Windows applications without requiring additional fax software. Incorporated into software by Lexmark, MCI, Lotus, My Software, Broderbund, Traffic Software and many others. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference. If you don't use PC as a Fax then remove.
hpztsb10 - Hewlett Packard utility which allows diagnostic and maintainance of your HP Deskjet series printer. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.
hpcmpmgr - main process belonging to the HP Component Manager, and is important to the running of their range of multimedia products. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.
HPWuSchd2 - Remove - Hewlett Packard Software Update Scheduler.
Incmail - Incredimail e-mail program which offers personalized e-mails and many more features. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference. I'd advise removing it and just launch Incredimail when you want to get email.
exec - Need more info.
WKdetect - Remove - Microsoft Works. The process automatically checks for new updates when you are online.
Adobe reader Spe... Remove - Just load Adobe when you need it.
NkvMon.exe - Nikon CoolPix camera software. It automatically detects if a CoolPix camera is connected. This program should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.
Data Life Guard Life... - Need more info (looks like a backup utility)

Ok now as I've gone thru this list there appears to be 2 printers installed. Do you have both a lexmark and a HP printer installed? If not go ahead and remove the above printer programs for any that you no longer have/use.

There are a few of the above files that I need more info to tell ya what they are. Look in msconfig for a path to the file which should give me enough info to rate the file for ya.

Dig in and let me know what ya come up with. Dinner is done so I'm gonna get to it before it gets cold [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

OH MY Reby, you're a genius! This is gonna take awhile, but I'll get right on it, and let ya know what happens. I've only seen the stupid window come on once in the last couple of hours, so that's better...

I'll finish my downloading tonite and get busy on the rest in the morning, THANK YOU!!!!!

As for the lexmark and the HP Printer, I have both, the HP is my backup, the lexmark I use, but after startup I usually just go close them down. Hmm, I have an Epson too, but I think I already disapbled that one...

OK, first problem, NORTON...

I went to uninstall, and it only gives me the option to change. So, curious, I clicked on "change", and it started to update something so I just shut it. I'm going after the other antivirus first. Hopefully this time it will complete the download before I get disconnected AGAIN ....

There must be another step in the system configuration utility because all the stuff came back checked when I restarted. I got all kinds of messages and scans and things, so what do i do with that window once I go back and uncheck all the start up stuff?


I seem to have sudden real issues here, I keep freezing up for long periods of time all of a sudden. I'm gonna go do a defrag too while I'm at it. Hopefully I'll be back!
