Reby, would you suggest any books (or websites) that cover website building (esp. for small businesses)? From what you've said, I think it would be better if I didn't host it myself, but I do want creative control, meaning I want to design my own bkgrd, format, etc. I'm guessing that since I already have a Paypal acct, I would only need to get 'verified' as a buyer and a seller. Is that correct? Thanks for all your help.

Mostly I've learned everything I know by either reading about it on the web, or by simply sitting down and just doing it to learn it.

Paypal - All I had to do was setup my business bank account with them and verify. Pretty easy.

Learn about SSI (Server Side Includes) for your header, footer, and nav bar. Its soooo much easier to update your site when you use SSI's because you only have to update one file and it will update all pages.

Images - Keep them small and no more than 3-4 per page.

Layout - Keep in UNIFORM! Nobody likes a site that is a jumble of pages.

Always design your layout first, then once you are 100% happy save that file as template.html and build all other pages off it (again to help keep site uniform).

Right now I think that's enough for you to digest. Before you start building pages share your template with me and I'll give you feedback on it. I'll try and think on it and get ya some more info as time permits...besides its lunch time [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

The only drawback is Adobe bought Macromedia out...argh! I'm no fan of Adobe but lets hope they don't screw up DreamWeaver like the rest of their buggy software.

I've been using Dreamweaver just the past few months. Previously I used Homesite, then ALlaire bought that and used it as the base for Cold Fusion Studio. That went well, good program, very stable, WYSIWYG editing wasn't great but I don't use it much anyway.

Then Macromedia bought Cold Fusion and wrapped it up with Dreamweaver so here I amh aving to use Dreamweaver or a 5 year old version of CF Studio...and I HATE it, the freakin' thing crashes all the time.

I can't imagine Adobe screwing it up more than Macromedia already has [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

Good to know Ohliz, I didnt know that. I use DreamWeaver 4 and I've never had it crash on me, but then again I don't use it for much more than html or asp documents for the most part. I have access to flash and cold fusion but never really used them much, in fact neither are currently installed on any of my dev machines.

Is it just me that hates pdf files? I think that's my biggest angst against Adobe. Who knows, maybe they will fix Macromedia's bugs. I'm all for squashing bugs in code, ctd's and bsod's are never fun.

What kind of pages do you design Ohliz?

I own a few domains that I tinker with. Mostly its a hobby but I do use it as a small business. I do a mix of webhosting, design, and I run my own custom email portal. Like most everybody else I had a computer problem (Spam, 1500 messages a day) so I sat down and learned what I needed to fix the problem. Just kinda snowball'd into a small business.

can I 'mask' my image/media parent directories?
and/or 'download protect' my image/media parent directories?

I did skim through some .htaccess info, but am still confused...my understanding is that it depends on your webhost as to what you can/cannot do... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

I did try using the 'password protect' offered by my webhost and it did protect the files (literally, though, so you have to provide the password on the website to view any of the images and/or stream any of the music [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

Yes you can but I'm not an Apache guru. Try apache-server.com tutorial on it.

Password protecting the file is more or less just ftp over http so that's not what ya want.
