I use a standard dvd player and its been able to read every dvd I've put in it. About the only new feature I'd like to have is the DVR but I'm not ready to pay for it yet. When I bought my dvd player I just bought a brand name in the mid price range...under $40.00 so its not like the dvd players are expensive anymore.

DVD is a great format but there are some issues with them like reigon coding that I'm not keen on. I feel that if I buy a DVD I should be able to play it in any DVD player. As it stands now if you have a DVD encoded from China it wont play on USA DVD players. Bleh!

I cant comment on bootleg DVD's other than to say if you are going to buy them then expect them to not work....Bootleg = warez and that's against board guidelines so you wont get much help regarding warez here. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

When DVD first came out I had most of my movies on VHS. I've since pulled those movies into a DVD format and stored a digital copy of the movie on my PC. So if I want to watch them I just fire up the PC and play them. I still have the VHS tapes so I can prove I have a legal copy. So I didnt have to upgrade my video collection....yet [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I have foound that the higher end DVD players tend not to handle the bootleg very well

i suggest..get a good one but also have a real cheapy( walmart $39.99) to handle those bootlegs

I have one with both vhs and dvd built in the same
box. I still have a lot vhs type so I won't have no
problem playing them.

I'm trying to replace all my VHS tapes with DVDs, but am finding some of the VHS tapes don't come in DVD...

Jazz - I used a capture card and then converted the file to .avi format. If you do a quickie google search you'll see a variety of ways to do it.

You can also use Windows Moviemaker to convert the VHS to WMV for playback in Windows Media Player. Also Apple Quicktime. The files are also a lot smaller in both of these formats (compared to MPEG2 or raw AVI).
