Reby/JKid yes it's me again still suffering with a limping machine. Can someone elaborate on the benefits of an external hard drive, like would it take some of the load off of my main one? I think with Dell it is hard or not possible to add memory, or is that wrong?

Re: External Hard Drives...
The only thing it would do is to add additional storage space for files/programs. Unless you have a small hard drive I would not suggest them (say under 20gig). They are more expensive than a normal hard drive (which you should be able to add to your dell).
Pro's:
Easy upgrade for more hard drive space
portable storage
Con's:
Easy to steal
Easy to break (drop it once and its probably hosed)
When you say this it makes me think of RAM not hard drives. RAM is like your computers active memory and hard drives are just a storage device. You are right about most Dell's in that the motherboards usually only have one slot from RAM so the only way to upgrade your RAM is to buy a larger stick of RAM. ie upgrade 128mb pc100 ram with a 256mb pc100 ram.I think with Dell it is hard or not possible to add memory, or is that wrong?
So if you need additional storage space then by all means buy a new hard drive. But I'd get an internal drive which you should be able to do with your Dell. Just make sure to set the second drive as a slave and your current drive set as the master. You do this by setting jumper pins on the back side of the hard drive, usually included with the drive.
Pretty easy upgrade for most. Most my machines have 4 drives (2 hard drives, CD ROM, and a DVD burner). Hehe I have over 300gig's worth of files
