Email Question for Reby...

Recently I changed my email address and it worked like a charm to get rid of all my incoming spam, I've seen narry a piece.

Suddenly, in the past few days I've been getting spam email and the wierd thing is, in the TO line, it isn't even my email address, it says THIS: [email protected], another one says [email protected]. How do they have this address and end up in my inbox? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

They are just creating a fake email, usually by forging the header with false info. Changing your email addy is good but once it gets picked up by spammers its quickly sold and you are back in spam mode. There are a number of ways to detect these kinds of emails but apparently your email host has not bothered to protect its customers *whistles innocently*

You either got your addy back into spam lists, or its your ISP/email provider allowing these emails through because they were paid to. I cant say for sure but it is possible to get rid of this junk by finding a good email provider. Understand that some ISP's and most spammers sell lists of email addresses for big bucks, its where many make their living.

When I hit send to check my email client fetches email from about 20 accounts. I average 1 spam email per week (total) by the time my mail is filtered by my server. I have had all my email addy's open to the public on webpages so I get a lot of garbage that tries to connect, but they are simply deleted or ignored by my server. (/evil laughter)

I don't want to seem like I'm advertising so I'll quit bragging [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Anyway I'd start looking for a new email provider/addy. Look for one that does scans on all incomming email like:

PTR - Reverse DNS
Virus Scans
Script scans - attachments filter
SPF Check
Relay Black List(RBL)
Heuristic spam filters or Content Filters
Abuse@host service
Webmail service

The only other option is to go to free email providers like hotmail, yahoo, gmail. The drawback is ads on their sites and the webmail only interface. Its also fairly common for these email addresses to be sold as well. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

Thanks Reby, I see it clearly now, but at least I'm not getting hit with 50 to 100 at a crack, just an annoying few. Hotmail and Yahoo sucks, your service sounds good!
