I'm perplexed and need some help

Morning,

I have on my laptop, which is just one year old, Office 2007, which includes Publisher. I use Publisher often in creating documents for my business. Once the file is created and saved to my desktop, as a Publisher file, & I go to open the file, I get this message:"......pub. file is not valid with Win32 application." The only way I can open it is go into Publisher and open it from there. So what gives? Can I change this?

might be two things:

1. a virus. there is a win32.exe trojan horse that may have infected your PC. Run your scan just to be safe.

2. your platform may not be compatible with the new Office 2007. You need to be on a 32-bit platform to run the software. Since it is a new laptop, I would be surprised if you are on a 16-bit platform but you never know.

Do you have any idea what I am talking about? If not, one of the geeky guys will have to explain it to you since I know what it all means but I am not very articulate in geek speak to make you understand.

oh, and it come simply be that your Operating System is corrupted and you need to re-load it.

again, since I dont want to walk you thru something I may bungle up in explaining, hopefully someone can tell u how to ascertain this.

It's possible the file extension has &quot;lost&quot; its association. Try this:

* Click on the file while holding the &quot;Ctrl&quot; button down
* Right click and select &quot;Open With&quot; and chose the Publisher app (you may have to search for it using &quot;Choose Programs&quot; and going to where it is installed).
* Make sure there's a check mark in &quot;Always use the selected program to open this kind of file&quot; box.
* Click &quot;OK&quot;

Double-click on the file and let us know what happens. Good luck!

It is not the 16 bit you have to worry about it is the newish 64bit software.

64 bit has been introduced in XP Vista and W7, but it could either be a virus as you state, or an problem with an upgrade.
I would google the error message and see what comes up. there is likely to be a lot of questions and answers on the web.

Yes my new laptop is 64 bit and though I have not yet tried to hook it up I hear people saying that my old scanner probably won't be able to be used because it was made to be hooked up to a 32 bit system.

since I am networked at home i have been running my printing thru my desktop when I use my laptop upstairs.

but I think i am gonna have the same issue as you once i install the printer drivers as well

Any particular reason you got 64-bit? Currently, there's hardly enough 64-bit apps to justify that version of the OS.

64-bit is nice if someone is going to use more than 4GB of RAM and need extra processing power, but supposedly there are hardly any native 64-bit applications out there for the average consumer that justifies the added cost. Check out a list of 64-bit apps here. The majority of those apps work just fine in a 32-bit environment.

do u get the same error msg when u open other Office software as well? If so, then something is corrupted along the line.
