Networking computers

Jkid - or anyone know how to do this??

I want to network my computers I have 2 desktops, 3 laptops and 2 printers that I want to have linked in... (one is a wireless printer)

I have a guy that I work with to do my computer stuff - but I have spent a good deal of money with him already and the amount that he is asking to network them - I figure maybe I can figure out how to do it on my own...

I know I need a server of some type - unless I can use one of the desktops as the server... what other hardware would I need... if it is a very complicated job and best left to a real professional den tell mi dat to...

Any light would be appreciated!

Jazzarina, I dont know if this will suit your goals but I use a software program called Network Magic to link all my computers and peripherals.

I found it much easier and cheaper than the standard way of networking my PC's together. Meaning - I dont have to pay my IT guy $100/hr to do it for me

Check it out and see if it will work for you.

It looks real good... how long have u been using it? was it fairly easy to set up? and how has the performance been?

I have been using it for a good few months now and I am really really happy with it. It is more stable and more user friendly than the "regular" way my IT guy had networked all my pieces getting a server was just too cost prohibitive for me, so this 39.99 solution works like a charm.

For me, no discernable decrease in speed. And like I said, it is very stable.

Once the software is loaded onto each PC, it will detect your wireless network and add the items for you. Very very user friendly.

Then you set up which files you want shared on each PC. You can also set alerts to see who is accessing the network and when if you need the added security.

NYlah - do you use the HOme defender thingy? I am worried that it will be one of those intrusive blockers.

Also I use Firefox as my browser - It says IE 5.5 or higher - which do you use? do u know if it will work with Firefox?

naah, you dont have to enable it if you dont want to. I barely remember that as part of the set up so it means I ignored it

You *might* have to configure the software to work along side your security suite whatever that may be. You can choose which program is gonna have default access to manage your firewall, wireless protection, security etc. Once you decide which one takes precedence then you wont have to deal with one overiding the other and blocking things you have already given permission to.

it must work with all browsers cause I run Firefox/IE 8 and Chrome depending on my mood. To be honest, I never paid attention to the browser thing and I havent had any issues whatsoever with using it.
