someone took / bought up one of my hosted domain names and redirected it to seriously sick disgusting porn site. I did not get a notification that it was expired and to be renewed. Did a whois investigation and found an email address and phone number pointing to someone in eastern Europe and sent the person an email requesting that I need the domain name back and not understanding. The guy responded saying I should pay him $231 to get it back as a former owner. I said yes, need it back, please tell me method of payment and how(secured online). I'm a bit leery though and presented all my questions to this person about how secure will my payment be... they are already scammers... mi nuh have any guarantee that my payment will be secured or if they will return the domain once payment received.

jKid... Xavier... unu familiar with these things. What approach should I take?

Yuh need ah third impartial party involved as the intermediary.

Usually yuh use like Pay-Pal, but wid dis it likkle different. Money is no problem, but how can you guarantee the return of the web site legally without an attorney? He could tek yuh money an run.

I would say, go back through the original leasing/seller agent you/he used and see if they can act as a broker.

This dude telling me that I can get back the domain for $231. You know, I am willing to pay the $$ just to get it back. He said I'm to use this website called escrow.com to do a wire transfer. The site supposedly secure and looks similar to Paypal. To do the transfer he will provide me with an authorization code which I'm to plug into my preferred domain name service company (network solutions). I'm leery and trying to be smart about this. I tried figuring out if this is someone in the United States but he's sending from google and the IP address layered in all the email source code comes back as a 'blocked IP'. What a headache.

He probably stole it and have no right to sell it.

When you register a page with some domains, they actually register it in their names and give you the right to use it.

They do that more often than not.

Remember our Reggae radio station that was supposed to be owned by one of four members?
well he thought he owned it. that was because Ir was published with hi same as owner, but the real owners (the company he was paying0 turned the tables on him and when he decided he wanted, charged him an arm and a leg. So this is quit common . Even if it is your name. Especially since it is your bame they are likely to do so that you will more likely pay big to get it. end if they charge a small fee. they will still maintain ownership without you realizing it. Yeah Dr. D, you are talking about ReggaePlus.com? Now you mention it, I do recall the incident. He eventually went under, if I recall, LiveRadio.com with the name ReggaePlus as on of the Reggae radio stations that they ran under the Liveradio banner.

He solely owned the rights to two other stations if I recall. Quiet Storm (R&amp;B ballads, Smooth Jazz), and Rock?? Can't remember all the details.

I do think that, my community Org web site name, is actually owned by the hosting Co. and we just lease the name. If we miss the yearly payment, then the hosting company can shut us down, and lease that name to someone else that wants to use that specific domain. True Domain Name ownership cost hundreds of dollars and they are limited. But Xavier can tell you more about that when he responds, since he has been through the process.

Domain names are really cheap, bit you have to register it with ICANN yourself.
Most people don't know that.
So they register their own names through these middle men.
But is cost what they charge you to register. google ICANN and visit their website and get informed.
Never register with middlemen unless you want to be held at ransom.
they ill eventually raise the rates if it becomes very popular,and in demand.

So irrespective of how you develop a website,if you don't register it yourself,you are liable to be charged exorbitant rates later, just to keep it.

One sign that you are trapped, is when they post some porn on the site you thought you owned.

Make Sure You Own Your Domain And 3 Other Important Tips
By Char .This morning I got a frantic call from an associate I have known for years. She is disgruntled with her current web manager and wanted to know if I was taking new clients. I asked her why she was considering a switch and she rattled off a handful of reasons, but one was that she felt her web manager was withholding information. I agreed to take her company on as a client. As she started collecting the information I needed to take over her site, it became very apparent that things were amiss.

Here are a few words of sage advice to all of you!

1. ALWAYS purchase your own domain name. Do not let your designer, seo company, friend or relative buy it for you. If anything goes south in the relationship, you have no real recourse and it can be a pain to untangle this. Make sure you print out the user name and password for the account and keep it in a safe place.

2. Know where your web site is being hosted. You should also have your FTP address, user name and password printed out and in the same file as your domain name information. This is YOUR information. You have all rights to it and need to have access to it in the event that your web manager can no longer do the job for you.

3. The content and design of your web site belongs to YOU. If you paid a designer to create the site, YOU own it. They have no right to keep it from you.

4. Back up your site to CD. Do this from time to time. Like all other business information, you need to have it in a safe place in case of emergency.

To most of you this will sound like pure common sense, but I have seen businesses make these mistakes over and over.

Dr. Dudd, now that you mention ICANN -- I am just now realizing that was the ONLY domain name that I never once received the twice per year notification to confirm my ICANN authorization for the domain. All the other domain names that I have I always receive the ICANN notice to confirm my information.... just did one last week.
I'm thinking further back and realizing but I did not register the domain, someone else did it and then supposedly switched the information over to me.

Lawd this has been one headache and a valued lesson. I slipped up on this big time and it's killing me.... the headache + $231.

Don't just pay for it again. You have to go to the Icann site and report it as disputed and tell them that you are offered that price.
then on payment they should register it to you.

don't tell the current owners what you are doing until they find out. Otherwise they may ask for moire.
Since they realize that they will lose the ownership and future income from it.
since seem they plan to still maintain ownership of it, in the future and charge higher and higher rates astime goes by. What they are selling you is the right to use it.

Not the freehold ownership of it. Dr. Dudd, very good advice! The person do appear to be in Russia.. sent me his bank and wire transfer info. I haven't done anything as yet but definitely will report it to Icann as disputed. Reviewing their website now.

I think you have gotten some good solid advice here.

Use an intermediary party for payment this way the domain name is turned over to you first before payment is sent. I would recommend paypal or the google payment system. Do not use a bankwire as they will take your money and run.

Set up alerts for domain name expiration as from my experience the renewals go to the spam box. Some host companies will actually notify you that your need to renew your domain name. If you intend to use the name for a while pay in advance for the maximum years the registrar will allow.
