It has been amazing to see what developers have done to transform the iPhone into a multifunctional device. One of the many tricks the iPhone can perform is that it can become a musical instrument. We covered an app that enables this last year called Ocarina and now one of the people who helped developed the app is teaching a music class at Michigan University on how to perform with it.
Georg Essl, an Assistant Professor with Computer Science and Engineering- Music, teaches the class which includes how to program the iPhone to create a musical instrument. Students will also learn how to compose, direct and perform pieces using the iPhone. A video featuring a concert performed by members of the class is below.
When I was in college I played the tuba and was in marching band. I can tell you that if they had an iPhone in my day and a class on how to turn it into a musical instrument I would have taking that class instead. In regards to performance, you have to give Essl some serious props considering he figured out how to use speakers attached to wrists as a method for performing with the iPhone.
