When I reinstalled Windows, I do not believe the hardware wizard came up for anything that is installed. I reinstalled Windows more than once. The first time was with the new hard drive. The sound worked fine then after I put in the SoundBlaster driver but there were other drivers missing that I located on the resource CD from Dell. After that, something got messed up with the vgaoem and some other drivers and I couldn't fix it, so I formatted and combined some of the partitions into one drive, then reinstalled again. The hardware wizard did not come up either time.
I looked around for a driver but what I have found on the Creative website is updates for a 64bit system and updates for Visa. I tried those but I get a message that they are not for my system and won't install.
The headphones do not work with the stereo line unplugged.

First of all, you never did tell what system you have? Always provide your system setup. The assumption is that you have a PC.
Second, NEVER jump to conclusion when troubleshooting a problem. Always verify the info with data, NOT your assumption or feelings.
Third, don't get defensive, answer the questions being asked, in trying to solve the problem. You only frustrate the people trying to help if you don't address the questions appropriately.
In other words, "Help Us to Help You".
Please go back and re-check your settings in the BIOS.
You also need to check and make sure that the proper output (playback) ports are selected (such as, your WAVE control is not muted, and is turned up).
You seem to imply that you added an external sound card to your system, did you add one or not?

2. Despite my statement in 1 above, I was not assuming, I was giving the best information I had from what I had already tried.
3. I wasn't getting offensive, I'm sorry if it came across that way. I believe that in my posts I responded to everything point for point to the best of my knowledge.
I'll go back and re-check my settings in BIOS, but I'm not entirely sure of what the settings should be. There may be a sound device on the motherboard that is not the SoundBlaster card. When I checked the BIOS settings it was set to off, which is what I read (somewhere ) it should be because there would be a conflict between it and the SoundBlaster if it was on. When nothing else worked, I went into BIOS and switched it on. When it still didn't work I went back into BIOS and switched it back off.
All of the volume settings are okay, I went into the volume properties and checked that. I also tried the Creative Diagnostic and tested the sound card. I got Hardware Detection: Pass, Wave Driver: Pass, MIDI Driver: Pass, Mixer Driver: Pass, DirectSound 3D Driver: Pass, Mixer Settings Check: Pass.
There are four jacks in the back of the tower. Three are output and one is input. Any of the three should work and I tried all of them. I even tried the input. I did hear some sound when I plugged it into the input jack but it was the kind of sound you hear when you touch the speaker jack. I don't know how to describe it.
I have not added an external sound card, I just have the internal SoundBlaster.
I'm going to check the BIOS settings and report back but first, some shots of the device information.</span>
Just as I thought. Well it recognize the sound card, but not the speakers. But what do i know...

they always believe that anything so simple can't cause so much problem.
And I would always solve them with explain what I did. Since theyare so smart.
As I get older i kind of learn to forgive people for being a puppet of their egos.
They don't realize that people like me live all my life being seen as a know it all. But the problem is that they ones that think so are always taking orders from me. Even when they have been in their post for decades before i join the organization.

The screen shot before that one "sound and audio device properties is teh one that should show it.
The if you click on Speaker volume properies, it should show the speakers.
Then clicking on advance should bring up another screen that allows for to make adjustments to the speakers.
Thes are adjustments other than volumes, like selecting stereo, Prologic etc.
The bottom one is the first one I am reffering to.
And by clicking on speaker settings advance the other screen adjustments will come up.

This reason I ask dis question is because if the card in not built into the motherboard and is separate, just the act of putting in the wires into the back of the machine can bump the card slightly. Eva see somebody waste an hour or two tracing a problem like yours? See me yah. Reseating the card can fix dat.

Windows runs the wizard in the background on reinstall. The System settings screen show no issues, but I've seen that too. Many times in fact and know better.

Go check the speakers like de doctor seh, but a few possibilities after I read dis. Look if the sound card separate and reseat it. After dat, we back to the drivers again, or the drivers that you loaded screwed up something on the card. Suggest removing all the drivers related to the anything on the sound card. Cancel the windows found new hardware on reboot or just after you remove them. Load the drivers disk and see what happen. The older machines and sound cards defaulted to speakers or PC speakers when they loaded. They did not recognize speakers when you plugged them in like the new PCs. IMHO, dis is a driver problem.
The card is OK it is just the connection between the card and the speakers that have a problem.
Sometimes during loading someone just mess with the speakers.
That is enough for an error that will cause XP to miss the speakers.
It recognize the sound card, they just need to follow the steps to re attach the speakers.
And it will just load the appropriate drivers, after it warn you.

But when I installed XP on the new drive, I had no problem with audio. How can I tell where the sound card is when I open the case? I can try taking it out and putting it back in.</span>
