Wireless Adapter Disappears after Vista Updates

Howdy and Happy New Year.

I need some help because I left my laptop working fine one night and woke up in the morning to realize that the Broadcom Network Adapter was gone. Just disappear so.

After dealing with and being annoyed with HP cuss service - mi do a system recovery (restore neva dweet). Okay it nuh work for a day, then the next day it start work. So I'm installing updates today and after the reboot, Broadcom disappear AGAIN.

Uninstalled the recent update (I think it was either SP 1 or 2), reboot and now the thing working.

Dis ever happen to anybody??

Some ISps have that as a safety feature.
If you leave in on overnight, it will disconnect the connection.
What you do to get it back is to unplug the modem and shut down the computer then while teh computer is off, you plug back in the modem and power it up.
After you do that you turn on the puter and you will get back the connection.
That use to happen to be when I had DSL, but with the FiOS, inever have that problem.

But does this also make the network adapter automatically uninstall? That's the biggest problem. You don't really want programs disappearing like that.

There are several bulletins in the MSDN library regarding this. According to the bulletins, most likely cause is an older network driver. But it still will not just disappear. It may be hidden. Do you know if you have Windows automatic update turned on? If you just did a system recovery, chances are it is on. First thing I'd look at the date on the network driver, then look on the HP website if there is anything newer.

Hey - I updated the driver, updated the BIOS and still malfunctioning. It was working up to last night and now it gone again.

The driver is there but get deselected in the process.
If you call your ISP they will promptly advise how to regain access.

MSDN is the support library for Microsoft. They offer it to IT companies. Most of the articles can be found if you search the Microsoft site, but it is a tedious process if you don't get the search combination of words correct.

What model HP is it? Their images are known to be a RPITA because of the way they setup the security. I've had to manually change the security settings of folders to get something done.

It's a DV2220. Vista 34 bit. I complained to HP because in the past they couldn't find my file and all a that. They worked it out on their end so I can now send it in. When I get it back I will let you guys know what they did.

I called a tech company today and they said I should make sure that all my updates are downloaded. And, even if they 'seem' up to date, I should still make sure that all drivers are up to date.

Will keep you in the loop.

This is a driver problem or the adapter needs a firmware update. The OS is not communicating at the Kernel level with the driver.

A few of the hits I found with this model number says to manually install the driver instead of letting windows do it for you. Also a few mentioned to disable some tunneling adapter. Like mentioned above, I feel this is a driver issue and is an example of what I talked about in the past about the windows hardware wizard. It is wonderful when it works.

Hopefully they will fix it and not just reimage it. I also hope you backed up your stuff before sending it in, otherwise you going cuss some more.

Heheh - u funny. But mi always back up mi files at least twice a year.

I called a Tech company here in NY and they told me that what they've told me that many customers who call with this issue. So I went ahead, redownloaded SP1 and other updates. I have just been queued to download SP2. I pray that it continues to work. If it doesn't I have my LAN wire handy and will let you know what happens.

I don't really wanna send it in now because it usually takes at least a week or two for them to return it to me. School starts tomorrow so u can imagine how dat go.

Suh-seh, suh-done.

It disappeared but I ran Health Check and a bunch a different tests and now it's back. They DID say that precautions needed to be take before installing SP 2.

BIOS Version should be F.39 or later. It can be updated here

I went ahead and sought out the Broadcom thingy and looked for an updated version of it. The result was that it's up to date. Let's see what happens from here on in.

If it's from the the DV series the only likely permanent solution is changing the motherboard. Nothing else works! The next problem that you're likely to have is the crystallization of the power ribbon that works with the power switch. Good luck! (hundreds of people, me included, didn't have any.)

Oh. Well here's the thing I sent it in. It got there TODAY at 11:25AM and I got another email saying that they've shipped it back to me at 6:00 PM.

Something looks fishy to me, but I will see what the deal is. I will make sure unu know what went down too.
