FTP not uploading files

For some days now the WS_FTP Home I use is not uploading files to any of my host servers. I keep getting an error "Ascii resume is unsafe..." With this error, I thought maybe better to switch to uploading in Binary format, but got same error. I see nothing wrong with my settings, as this just started out of the blues.

Out of frustration, I thought it has got to be a problem with WS_FTP, so I got another ftp program, called SmartFTP, but having the same issue. I do not think it is a problem with the host server, as I subscribe to other host servers and experiencing the same prob in trying to upload files to the servers. It does not matter the file type... .pl, .html, .gif/.jpg ... still the same problem on different ftp program.

Any help? Appreciated.

Well I just checked the doc's for WS_FTP 7.5 (here) and the only suggestion I have is to set transfer method to 'Auto' instead of Ascii or Binary.

It may be a good idea to turn off auto retry and resuming a failed transfer as it may cause confusion if you have a file in your outbox that fails to connect/transfer.

I'd tried Auto transfer mode but that did not work. I've been switching back and forth betwx WS_FTP Home and SmartFTP -- In SmartFTP I *just* changed the data connection mode from PASV mode to Auto Mode (PORT). There is also a button for data transfer to be in Passive mode, so I selected that and the files got upload to the web server.. !

I'm still confused as to what's going on, but at least one ftp prog has started working. I have to get WS_FTP working again, as that's what I use... SmartFTP is a shareware.

Thanks for the help. WS_FTP has a bulletin board but zero replies.

Are you running the latest build 7.5? I cant find much about that error. I see a few users that have had that problem but no solution was posted. About the only other thing I could think of on your end would be a firewall. Are you running a firewall?? If you do have a firewall have you opened up port 21?

yes, I'm running the latest version of WS_FTP Home. An older version on my desktop isn't giving the same problem, I'm having with this version that is running on my notebook.

I recently upgraded to WinXP/SP2, but I honestly cannot remember if the FTP issue started before or after. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] I thought maybe it's the firewall, so I disabled it...I'll enable and look if port 21 is opened.

Gonna do more troubleshooting, and will let you know how it worked out. Thanks!

I had the same problem. I posted a reply to this but now I don't see it. Here it is again. Go into setting, and security. Some sites require that you select PASV Mode. Others require that you deselect it.

Thanks Tropi! It worked!! I selected PASV Mode for the remote site and it worked. I'm a bit puzzled how/why the data mode no longer can transfer in pasv mode -- maybe erratic behaviour. I also suspect that my firewall could be a harbinger as well. Finally can start uploading pages to my website.
