MP3 is just a file format, which is to say the way the data is arranged and compressed. The nice thing about MP3 is the compression it gives compared to sound quality. The old days a song may have taken 20mb vs the MP3 format of 3.2mb. You get the same (more or less) recording for a fraction of the storage space.
A MP3 player is just a device that plays digital formatted content (music, books, etc). Usually the digital medium is downloaded to a computer, then you hook your device up to the PC via USB to transfer songs to/from your MP3 player.
