UNDATED - Changing batteries may soon become a thing of the past as researchers revolutionize how electricity can be stored.
Currently, batteries are based on decades old technology using chemicals to store electricity for short term use. Eventually, the batteries will have to be recharged or thrown away.
However, that could all change with something the size of a postage stamp that is infinitely rechargeable. It's called solid state technology, a new generation of significantly smaller, more powerful and much longer lasting batteries.
Scientists at Infinite Power Solutions in Littleton, Colorado devised a way to absorb leftover ambient energy emitted by everything from light, cell phone calls and even the mechanical vibrations from a car. These are small amounts of energy, but when continually fed into batteries that lose nothing from leakage, the number of possible applications is limitless.
These batteries are already advanced enough to power wireless censors used in remote controls, smoke detectors, security systems, bridges, airframes and pipelines.
