1) Multitasking – To save battery life of iPhone or iPod touch, Apple did not supported multitasking completely (restricted to some apps) till now. But with the growing demand of complete multitasking like available on other smartphone devices like android phones, Blackberry and high end Windows Mobiles, multitasking in iPhone OS 4.0 is now a reality.
iPhone 4.0 firmware user interface will resemble Apple’s desktop Expose feature. After tapping the Home button twice, an expose-like interface will bring up the currently running apps, prompting user for quick selection. Once the selection is made, the iPhone OS zooms out of the Expose task manager and transitions you to that running app.
2) Folders – To tackle the problem of having too many apps on your phone, Apple is adding Folders feature in the iPhone 4.0 firmware. When you are editing your Home screen, you can drag one app on top of another app to automatically create a folder. The iPhone automatically names folders based on the categories of the apps. “Intelligent Naming” feature set the folder name according to the content of the folder. Huh! Pretty intelligent! iPhone 4.0 firmware supports up to 180 folders for a total of 2160 apps, that is 12 apps per folder.
3) Improved Mail – Lots of juicy features introduced and it seems that Apple has completely changed Mail application for iPhone 4.0 firmware. Now you have “Unified Inbox”, that allows you to see all incoming mail from multiple accounts. The new version of iPhone Mail provides fast inbox switching between multiple accounts, an option to organize messages by thread, and the ability to open attachments with an app from the App Store. Just tap files attached to e-mail messages to open them in a separate third-party apps.
4) iBooks for iPhone OS 4.0 – iPad’s iBooks is now available on iPhone 4.0 OS devices. The iBook application will work on both iPhone and iPod touch, and all books and page placements will be synced wirelessly between multiple devices.
5) Enterprise Features – iPhone 4.0 has added new features for business users -
* Data Protection - Protect email messages and attachments stored on iPhone 3GS by using the PIN code as an encryption key. Availability of encryption APIs that can be used for providing data protection to third party apps as well.
* Mobile Device Management - Deploying improvements for companies that deploy large number of iPhone. New Mobile Device Management APIs can be integrated with third-party applications to wirelessly configure and update settings, monitor compliance with corporate policies, and even wipe or lock managed iPhone devices.
* Wireless App Distribution – iPhone OS 4 firmware allow enterprises to securely host and wirelessly distribute in-house apps to employees over Wi-Fi and 3G. Applications can now be updated without connecting to your computers.
* Improved Mail & Exchange Support – Lets you set up multiple Exchange ActiveSync accounts and now works with Exchange Server 2010.
* SSL VPN Support – Allow you to securely connect to a corporate network via VPN on Demand.
6) Game Center – Apple announced a social-gaming network called Game Center and will provide a stiff competition to Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. On game Center you can invite friends, participate in online matchmaking, compete in leaderboards, earn and track achievements, and more.
7) iAd – Developers can now incorporate ads into their application to make money. The model will allow some of the developers to keep their apps for free. The system is built entirely on HTML5. Apple recently acquired the Quattro Wireless for $ 275 million and iAd product has been built on top of Quattro
