Is there a vendor like Skype or Vonage that I can pay for monthly for Jamaica? I was all excited when I purchased my headphones this week only to find out that Jamaica is NOT a country where we can use Skype or Vonage. NO GOOD. I get it, but I was disappointed. The JA phone card industry would take a HUGE hit. is there an alternative or can someone recommend a good calling card or substitute for calling JA? thanks so much

I am going to transfer this post to the technology forum where you will likely get the help you need.
Most people in JA who have a Voice over IP svc such as Skype or Vonage usually have US based numbers. They plug the device into their routers in Jamaica and are usually good to go

one set of fambly has a US number thru cable and wireless (i think)..not sure how much it costs
the other set have magic jack, thru which them get a us# as well.Comment

Yahoo messenger works quite well too and you can leave voicemail.
BTW, it free, other than you internet connection.

This is not true. Anywhere in the world that have highspeed internet can use Vonage or Skype.
Vonage is better since it works like a normal phone, where you pick up a normal handset and dial and receive calls
as you would from a normal landline. The quality of connection is also much better with Vonage than with Skype.
A whole heapa people in Jamaica use Vonage.
Skype can use too but the problem with it is that your computer must be on all the time to receive calls.
Plus depending on the ammount of calling you do, it's cheaper to use Skype for a couple phone calls here and there
and if you use the phone a lot, then Vonage becomes more economical.
Personally I use Vonage at home, Skype on my mobile, and magic box at hotels when I'm on the road.Comment

I am sorry Magic I was not clear. I wanted to buy a plan for 15 per month and call Jamaica land lines and cell phones like I can call the other 40 countries with Skype. Or vonage offers 80 countries with a plan. Many of the people I know in JA do not have computers so the option of Skype to Skype or whatever IM - - - is just not going to get it. I was disappointed to say the least and hoped there was an alternative. it seems there is NOT. thanks so muchComment

OK. I am ready to set up Vonage for house in Jamaica. I will use with a US number. All systems are in place EXCEPT the adapter. Can I get it IN Jamaica? Other than someone taking it down there for me, how else can I get it TO Jamaica? Fedex?Comment

the last time i tried to send a very small box to Jamaica by Fedex them tell sinting bout $100 and odd dollaz

Still worth it. I called Ja. at 7:52 PM, spoke for 35 minutes, and Verizon charged me $165 for that call

ditto since 2004 and Vonage is the leader in terms of the customer features offered with VoIP service
