VIRUS ALERT!!!

You've probably heard about the potential outbreak on Friday, February 3
but if not, here is a little info in case this hits us big.

The worm is called MyWife, BlackMal, BlackWorm and the more popular
name, the Kama Sutra worm. It spreads via email as well as by file
shares. The thing about this malware is that is aims to destroy files
instead of seeking financial gain or creating a zombie machine.

The content is usually pornographic in nature, trying to trick
the user into opening a file which is supposed to contain sexual
content, etc.

Yup its true. What's more is Microsoft is aware of it and decided not to release a patch till next week, unless of course you are a paid subscriber to their services. What a bunch of twits, release the fix now...before the virus goes balistic on user hard drives. Quite annoying

Well I block most known file attatchments used to infect to prevent infections, but for those that use a mail client (Outlook, OE, Thunderbird, etc) I'd suggest the following:

1) Turn off preview (this can in fact launch a virus)

2) Do not open any email with an attatchment unless you know exactly what it is and that your friend was sending it to ya.

3) Update virus definitions TODAY and run a full system scan TODAY.

4) Run windows update TODAY and again next week (Mon/Tues).

If you use XP//Win2k there is another trick you can use that involve user permissions. For example, on my dev/game PC I have 3 user accounts. One is called Administrator and is a dummy account with a huge password and no file permissions (at trap if you will). The next account is my actual admin account with full system rights, I only use this acct when I want to install a program or modify system settings. The last is a general user account with limited user access. This means the general user account cant install programs or modify the system. It can launch programs and use the PC but it cant make global changes and thus cant be hijacked to install spyware/adware/virus/trojans etc. Sure it can try but since that account has no rights the malicous script/program often fails. Tricky tricky eh?

Anyway I gotta get back to work, update your systems folks...
