I would suggest that you dont get the laptop and just ask the school's IT guy for the access you need. After all you are not one of the students no?

Here's the deal. I work in a public school. They have everything BLOCKED from access. NO I do not want to go to porn sites or anything inappropriate.....but for example....they have goody two shoes Negril.com blocked out, but NOT the NEw Negril .com (which is filthy, so go figure)..

If you want a graphic of a elephant and do a google search, then go to images...all blocked out..

Many African american oriented websites....blocked out (and these are clean intellectual type places)

Anyway here is my question....if I get a lap top and one of those card things, someone told me that it would pick up the nearest internet access, which once again, would be the school system, and then i would have gone to all of that trouble and expense for naught...

Ok you guys know everything...how can I have alap top that is hooked up to the REAL internet at work??????

Borrow or rent a LapTop with a wireless card and test it first.
See it is blocked at the cable box or on the computers.
Why let some pesky system keep you from good porn...err educational material!

Is the WIFI internet access provided by the school? If they provide the WIFI access then it too is probably restricted. If you are picking up a signal from somebody that lives in the area then yes that may work for ya.

As suggested above I'd go talk to the IT guy first, and take him/her some cookies or something (we geeks love it when users think of us). If his hands are tied then you can try the wireless route.

I doubt you'd have to borrow a laptop to find out if you can get a signal, go for a walk and look for people with laptops and just ask them. Chances are your local population of geeks have already figured out what your options are.

If all else fails, there is always dial-up through the phone line to your own ISP. It is slower than the schools network, but you at least are able to surf the net.

OK some of your advice is already over my head, but this I know.....sucking up to tech support won't help, as the access is not locally blocked (they didn't trust us here in corrupt mempho), it is blocked at the statedepartment level for all Tennessee schools. Getting an exception is like asking for an annullment from the Pope, and would only alert the building level principal to the fact that you are spending wayyyyyyyyyyyy tooo much time on the net.

SO that's out.

I know a teacher who did do dial up through the phone lines, but somehow certain things were blocked there as well. I know the phone lines and computers are tied together because if one goes out, so does the other.

THe other problem with that is that plugging the computer into the lap top makes me not able to answer my phone, and if the wrong person (i.e. the boss) is the one calling , knows I am in my office, and not answering her calls, that could be a problem...and she has been known to jsut barge in without knocking...it's HER school...

Well looks like I'm stuck huh?

The Spanish Computer

A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

"House" for instance, is feminine: "la casa."

"Pencil," however, is masculine: "el lapiz."

A student asked, "What gender is 'computer'?"

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether "computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun.

Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be of the feminine gender ("la computadora"), because:

1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;

2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;

3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ("el computador"), because:

1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;

2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;

3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and

4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

You may or may not have DSL service, becausr with a regular phone line you should not be experiencing any blocking. Unless their system detects the dial-up modem screech during the server handshake process.

There is an inexpensive device on the market that you plug your phone line into, then your PC and telephone. It interrupts the PC when a regular telephone call is coming in.

J-Kid most businesses,schools etc have pbx devices which may be connected to various port based services. a pots line is separately configured and may only be in select locations.
