Skype - Need Help

Does any one here use Skype to make international calls – especially to JA?

The international Plan that Verizon offering naah cut it at all considering the amount of call mi plan fi mek on a month to month basis.


I am due for a new phone and someone mentioned that I need to look into Skype but I must get a mobile phone that uses Skype technology.

Mi go pan dem website and apparently dem noh have no customer service number for me to ask how it works etc etc. So mi need help if you all have experience with it.

Also how it works on PC would be helpful.

I use skype for call to Jamaica on my iPhone and have no problems. The quality is good and the price is good. Have you used the free version of skype before?

Yes, mi use tuh use Skype fi call Asia, Canada, and USA out of state as well. You can also run Skype from a flash card.

The camera function is quite good, depending on the clarity/quality of the camera that both parties are using. If fi dem web camera crappy, den yuh wi si dem crappy. If dem hav ah betta webcam den yuh wi si dem very clear.

Mi use tuh talk to Asia fi days, pan $10 on mi account.

It is very simple to use it PC to PC, or PC to phone.

Skype to Skype people calls, dem deh calls is free.

Occasionally yuh may get some stuttering pan high peak usage times, but overall di service is very good.

I think di Droid cell phone hav Skype built in as a standard apps.

The other phone will not have Skype on it ..so Skype to Skype (free) is not an option unfortunately

Their website is so hard to figure out what is what. Maybe you guys know. If you do a subscription i.e a monthly fee do you still pay a per minute rate charge for all calls?

Xavier – I am looking into the Droid now but for that phone to use Skype you have to buy a data package. Dis is where mi confuse cause how mi ago pay Verizon fi a monthly data package just to use Skype and den pay Skype a monthly fee pan tap a dat again. Can you explain the connection between a Skype enabled phone and the relationship to paying for the service?

Why dem doan have a customer service line BTW?? Cho

With Skype you can pay monthly for international UNLIMITED calls and that is all you pay. You just need to click on the pull down menu to make sure the countries you intend to phone are on the list.

You can also buy credits (pay as you go)which are purchased whenever you want (not a monthly charge). You just purchase more credits when you are getting low which takes a while because the rates are so reasonable.

If you are constantly calling long distance it would make sense to get a monthly plan, if only calling occasionally then just buying the credits as you need them is really all you will need.

You will need to purchase a data plan for your phone to use Skype because you need to be logged onto the web to access it.

I use Skype on my laptop and iPhone with little or no issues but I am not sure about the Droid so I can't help you there.

Edited to add</span>... You will only need to purchase a data plan for your phone if you wish to use Skype on the go. If you can wait until you can log onto the web via an available wifi connection then you can do without a data plan.

Mi was so glad when you said pay a monthly fee and make UNLIMTED calls.. that sounded good but mi just get a response from Skpe . I sent the questions to them and they just got back to me by email and it contradicts what yuh said. Now mi more and more canfuse. All I saw on the wbesite when I put in JA was options for for 60 or 120 minutes - nothing said UNLIMITED.

Help mi sort out dese parts please …cause dem a talk bout limits even with a subscription

Both of them contains limited minutes of calls:

Hey Wendy, I checked the Skype site and with a monthly plan you can make unlimited calls to 40 countries around the world. They list the countries, however JA is not on that list.

Mi or mi family or friends never paid monthly. Mi jus load up di amount mi want an use ie til it finish. Mi can memba once mi had a $10 load last mi fi two years caa mi was not talking long hours wid each calls after ah while.

I don't know about using skype on the phone, but I use skype to skype on the computer every day.

It does not cost anything for the skype, but the monthly internet fee's in JA are dear...

We use Claro, it's $3500J a month for unlimited internet access.

It come in like a cell phone with bad reception during peek times tho the calls drop a lot...

Now, in the middle of the night we can talk for hours and never get boot off...

You know Wendy, they do have a service by which they will automatically top up your pay as you go credits if they get real low. In that way you will be saving money by getting better rates than normal long distance and you never have to worry about getting cut off because you have used all your minutes. You can still check your account from time to time if you wish. That may be a good way for you to go.

You need a microphone yes. Webcam is optional.
